thanks Ron -- i'm not sure i can supply a place with humidity, this wind we've been having is very dry -- but will do what i can.

I filled a couple of tupper ware containers with water and the sink with water and opened the toilet to up the humidity in the bathroom then just left them on the floor in there.

What makes an embryo stop developing between day 10 and 14?? I am still fussed about my SGDs....Ron or Kim can you feed my need????

That would be awesome for so many things. Like a quarantine pen and a grow out pen like you said.

Thanks for the link. I wonder if any of the Costco's closer to me have it??? I will have to do some digging.

Well, I finally decided to buy one and our Costco is out of them! Another lesson learned! When you see something good at Costco, buy it then or you'll be sorry later!

Just catching up here..
hey, my local Penngrove post office just called, and Molly's eggs have turned up! i'm going to run down & pick them up -- the three CL eggs i got from Deann were started under Daisy yesterday afternoon, but it seems like it should be close enough timing to just add Molly's eggs as well?

yay!!!

My silkies don't have perfect feet feathering on the showtable, because they live in runs the same as all my other birds. In the winter, they deal with some mud when the rain is blowing. They don't seem to have the go inside concept very well. In fact, every night DH lifts each bird into the coop before he shuts the door. They will cluster on the ground around the ladder, even though they are quite capable of going up and in.
Your Sillies.. um I mean Silkies have you well trained. Mine have a "ladder/ramp" to climb to go to sleep - and they go in all by themselves if they want a nice warm silky pile to sleep in at night.
Quote: I would candle them to see how well they were handled. Check for loose air cells (bubbles rolling around, funny shapes) and if you find any let them sit for 4-6 hours. I would hesitate to set them longer because your hen has already been sitting on the other eggs for a day - so these would be a day behind. Some hens are good about sitting for 4 or 5 days to hatch everybody if the chicks don't wander too far, but some hens are not..

and another question, for those of you who've had broodies that you HAVEN'T moved to their own separate nesting area -- how do you make sure the chicks, once they hatch, are getting their chick starter & the big chickens don't eat it all? (the layer feed will be in a feeder that's too tall for the chicks to reach) and if the broody is keeping her chicks in a nest that the other big girls are still trying to lay in, will there be trouble?

thanks!!!
I created a "chick" area using an upside down laundry basket. The chicks could get in to get their food - but the big hens could not.. I put the chicks and mother in there when I first put them out, but then took mommy out after about 20 minutes - so the chicks knew the food was in there. The hens did stand on top trying to figure out a way to get in - but the chick food was safe for the chicks! I have found that the chicks sometimes tried the layer food - but they liked their food better. Momma on the other hand really wanted to get back in and eat that food and call the chicks to it.. So I let her back under until she and the chicks were stuffed!

Ok so today was a first! I have a TEN week old silkie rooster crowing! The only other roos from that batch that are making noise are the silver leghorns. (this reminds me I think both the jubilee orphs are pullets... I might need a roo if Mario lets me keep them!)

I was stunned. The first thought was w t f... then I thought, I should breed him! What if he passed the trait on and you could pull all the silkie roos at 10 weeks???? I call him purple haze . He is dark blue with a tinge of red in his hat, hes a cutie. huge comb, too.. hrm...

Hi Everyone!!

It's been quite a while since I've had time to post. How is everyone? Gosh it's been so long since I've seen you guys. I am only working 4 hours a day now so I will have time to share again! I've missed BYC!

I have 19 EO eggs and 19 Pita Pinta eggs in my incubator. They went into lockdown today and we expect them to start hatching on Monday. I can't wait to see what comes out! As of 5 days ago, every single egg was fertile and growing. I hope User Error doesn't get in the way of them hatching. I will post pics soon!

I have an EO flock that are very close to the Spanish standard and want to start sharing them with all of you. After next week we will be selling hatching eggs. If anyone is interested please PM me. As for the Pita Pintas, we are still unsure if we're going to do started pullets or eggs yet. We'll decide that next week too. I can't wait to meet my little babies and share pictures! It's been way too long since we had baby chicks in this house!

I hope everyone is having a fabulous Saturday afternoon and I look forward to getting to know everyone (again)!

Quote: Absolutely, they go up and down the ladder, in/out of the coop all day. At night, there are a couple of sillies on the ladder and everyone else dogpiled at the foot of it. In the morning, they all run out just fine. They need to be picked up and cuddled each night before going to sleep...............................except the stinking mean roo that bites! If he wasn't vaulted, he'd probably get thrown through the door. He had drawn blood on both of us on more than one occasion. Soon he is going to be magical, medicinal, black chicken soup!
