California - Northern

Good day all! I am in the Sierra foothills. Specifically North Auburn. Highway 50 is my families line between north and central California. Up here we have to prepare our livestock for the on coming weather the day before. That includes my 4 ducks and 15 chickens. Because I don't wantto loose any of my livestock this winter and this being my first time owning ducks will they be OK with snow cold temps?
Welcome! I'm close to you - born and raised in Auburn but now up the hill a bit more. Auburn gets a good snow about once every 10-15 years, so I wouldn't worry about your ducks and chickens. I don't raise ducks, but I've seen many people post pictures of their ducks in the snow. Chickens do better in the cold than in the heat, so as long as your coop is draft free, they will be fine.

Anyone have a good source for nice dark marans hatching eggs? I want to add some new blood into my group

Wynette has gorgeous Marans eggs.

Ugh......I am so frustrated! My BA has decided to try this broody thing out....so now I have 2 out of 5 broody girls in that pen, and only 3 nest boxes. Is the broody bug contagious? They just started laying in the past 1-2 months....I didn't plan for broodies so soon. If she sticks, I guess I will give her half of the eggs my partridge wyandotte is sitting on.

In unrelated news, I have one hen who lays eggs that have a very thin albumen....like water almost. Is this something to worry about or just the way she is?
Yes, I've found that broodiness is contagious. I'm hoping to get ONE broody, as I'd like to get some more wellies on the ground for spring time, but I don't want to brood them myself right now.

I'm recovering from surgery so this really helps keep my down. Perfect day to lay on the couch and watch the series North and South.

Wishing you a speedy recovery!

I hope the surgery wasn't major. And OMG, that was always my favorite thing to watch while recuperating. I thought I was the only one.

You should post Polish pics on the CSU thread! Too quiet over there. Give a description of the bird in the photo, using the SOP as the guideline. Describe the good and bad points. The first post on the thread describes the thread's details.

Bengals just ask to be photographed! They are so exotic looking. I have tons of pictures of mine. Chickens too
