oops replied to the wrong post.Ron, The friend with the farm where my breeding birds are has decided that she doesn't like the Bresse. She doesn't like the birds and her husband doesn't like how they taste. I am probably going to be getting rid of almost all of my stock.![]()
Whoops! This was supposed to be a PM.
That makes sense. I know dogs will do that, I didn't know chickens did though.I would guess it's a dominance thing, establishing/maintaining pecking order.
We had 2 female yellow labrador dogs & the older one was always mounting the younger one.
The older one wouldn't mount anyone else's dogs, though.
I just witness the same thing in my coop yesterday afternoon between 2 banty hens.![]()
Just looked, no spurs.Yep normal. Not common but normal. Does ahe have spurs?
This was FULL on mating, right in front of my feet when I went to check on them first thing this morning. Melvin has only been gone for 6 weeks now. I knew that the chicken hierarchy would change with him gone, but didn't expect that. I guess she decided to take over for him. It's kinda funny, because my mom was just telling me that she thinks one of her hens started crowing (not a "possible rooster"). I wonder if there is something in the water around here...I got some two year old hens from my friend in carmichael who can't have roosters. One of the hens, a silver laced wyandotte, is a man. She doesn't crow, but, she sort of mates with the other hens. Not full on mating, but just short of vent contact.... LOL. She also gets into scuffs with one of my roosters... she raises her hackles and tries to spur him.
Awww. That's a big jump!! Last time I used a bin like that as a temporary brooder, the heat lamp melted the plastic.
must be the droughtThat makes sense. I know dogs will do that, I didn't know chickens did though.

She jumped up onto the feeder, then onto the edge. Even from the top of the feeder it's a big jump!
That's not good that it melted the plastic! My heat lamp has been in that spot for over 24 hours now though, and the plastic is only warm, so I think I'm good![]()
How long are you storing for? I just set them out on the counter if I am jsut letting them for a day or 2 to settle. For all of you who store eggs before setting them, how do you keep the temperature near 60 degrees?
adjusted refrigerator?
I love your pictures!
