I want to try and grow potatos this year!! I have them ready to plant, but I need to make a container to put them in. I've read that you should plant them in a potato "tower" and add more dirt as they grow. How did they turn out last year?
Our beds are about 4 feet wide and 48 feet long. Just about everything we go is high density, (translation-labor intensive), since we don't have that much sunny areas to grow in. Last year we planted 4/6 inches deep, about 20 inches apart and put 2 rows in the bed. After they grew up to 18 inches tall we added more soil crearing mounds. We just kept adding to the mounds until the plants died off, after a couple of weeks dug through the mounds and collected them.

Hi everyone,

I finally broke down and built myself a new coop for my two sebright banties and to expand the flock. Here are some quick pictures I took.

Let me know what you think and any suggestions.

And how do I lift the two PM quota from my account? Thanks.

wow! I didnt know this! I just plant the potatoes I don't get to that start growing and pull em out when i want potatoes. but they go in the not so sunny areas so i don't know how big they would get . I may try this instead. We are having to move our garden to the front of the house on the hill this year . The garden 'plot' in the back does not get enough sun so its becoming grass and chicken coops.

Does anyone know if watering grass more makes it grow quicker? Mario is debating watering it every 2 days instead of twice a week so there is more for the chickens to eat. I know they keep it too short for it to grow fast ( or I remember reading mowing lawn short makes it grow less?) but he thinks they will like having more to graze on.

nice! I have coop envy. It goes up when you up your post count. They just don't want spammers to create accounts and go wild.

I think once you post a LOT more your PM quota expands. Go over and introduce yourself and then talk a lot...

Quote: If the EE is a Hatchery boy he may be mean. Mean Roosters become soup(or find someone that wants a rooster) and are not allowed!

You will need to see. Sometimes they will become aggressive, which is common during their teen age years. You need to see which one is the nicest.

Way too early to say and if we threw out every boy that actually acted like a boy..well, we wouldn't have any offspring.

My new Marans roo (grown young man) has been a little bit eyeing me when I come in the pen. Today he danced towards me and I followed him around threatening to pick
him up. There is a huge flock of my other hens with another roo who is free ranging all around this boy and he has a measly two girls, so I get that he thinks he was gypped on the harem and he's going to learn who he can and cannot be top dog of.

Look, we can't ask these boys to protect a flock for us and then do something that makes them think they need to defend the flock and then off their heads for it.

They're roosters and if you want to own one then respect them. I'm not saying that all Roos who show aggression can be good boys but I am saying, make sure you didn't do anything to challenge them. Don't make soup out of them for doing their job.
Good point here and I hope I did not make it sound like that. I hope to help clarify what I meant with the following.

This is one of my Roosters. He was very friendly to people. I sent a trio to Chiqita for Gomez Bantams to get but he was not able to take them. They became Chiqitas.

I am very proud to say he gave up his life battling a Mountain Lion! None of his girls were eaten.

A good rooster is not one that I have to wear gloves to handle. He will not run at me, fly through the air and try to hit me with his spurs. Roosters like that do not belong at my place. A good rooster to keep will defend the flock, alert to flying predators and feed the girls treats. He will die defending them too but he will not attack people.
I totally agree....but in my experience, and we have roos around her a lot since, for various reasons we do grow out a lot of our babies ourselves before selling them. Some are totally docile even in the teenage years and won't even try to steel chickens away from Big Daddy, others will continually challenge.....and then some form a pack. And while they're growing up, I think it's more common then not to experience the one trying to pop your eyes out.

I just want people to think about age, situation and personality of a roo who has attacked before you deem them mean and dispatch. Personally, if I feel misguided aggression from a roo I ask if it's me or what else was happening and then I try to wooh him. My best roos have been aggressive a time or two and we had to deal with it but they're fantastic flock headers. I do believe there will be roos that have a mean personality and nobody wants that on their farm, let alone pass that personality trait to the next generation.

Thanks everyone.

@Ron, I was thinking about Terminators when you said Robots...hahaha

@ChickNMamma, funny because that's exactly what my neighbor said. She said I just need to install plumbing and she is ready to move in.

The project took 3 full weekends and now I realize I it was overkill for a flock of 2-4 birds. The coop is 4'W x 5'L x 5'H. I wanted to be able to get inside and clean.

You certainly take pride in your work, great job! Do you have anything on the ramp for traction?
