For those of you that heat your coops how do you do it? with a heat lamp? And if so what time do you have it come on?

I is not cold enough to heat coops in Woodland. It has to get very cold for them to need heat.

Summer is worse for them than winter.

I don't heat my coops up here at 2200 feet altitude, either.

Many BYCers in Alaska don't heat THEIR coops either. As Ron said, heat is worse than cold for chickens. Just keep the coop free of drafts and moisture - but don't forget the ventilation!

ok, a facebook friend has invented a rooster collar. IT lets them crow but not streach the noise thingie to bellow, so they sound like baby crows.

I can't get the pictures to save on my computer so Ill post them when MArio gets home. But i'm very excited about them!!! I know about 90 people who need them, lol.

I just worry about them getting wet during the day and then freezing at night.

If you keep open fronted coops they will not get frost bite. If you are below about 4500 feet or so on the west slope you will be fine
I try and use three sided coops with open fronts and they stay snug and dry just keep the wind and rain off them at night

@chiqita a rooster collar very interesting, do they make them in size Serama? lol

Right now we make them in any size we want, she is not selling them. Hot glue, you are my friend!!
My new silkies are exploring the new space today. We have made the courtyard between our bedroom and the deck the new silkland. Flame is dispencing sweet sweet love to his wimmenz. The new girls are not fans. But the 2 ones that were only possible pullets flame seems to think look mighty nice so I'm hopeful.

Moppet and Danny boy are not active yet. Moppet might need to be ai'd . I think he is an asexual chicken. But he is bloddy perfect so he has to share....
