yummy

I have an inquiry: would an marans rooster over a CL hen make a sex linked OE?
I'm figuring the marans may make the cross a little meat heavier and better processing for the boys.
I have marans/ AM crosses going, but wondering about CL
Just a little chicken math going on here.
I already need more pens, so what's another one right??
You would lose the auto-sexing, but would end up with OE's. Also, I've processed both breeds and they are both tasty birds. I usually process them around four months.

I bet he's getting more calls than he can take care of, lol

Thank you Deb. I got all excited thinking I'm some awesome genius chicken scientist over here. I know some crosses are sex linked, but heard the CL boys aren't worth processing. Thought the marans would add some meat on the bones.
So the CL's are good? I need to take one of @PetRock 's processing classes. My only fear is that if i do it few and far in-between , I really won't learn anything. The time i did it myself it took HOURS for a few birds

Every CL that I've processed, I found them to be quite tasty and tender. In fact, I think I commented on it once about a year ago.

And time to process, it kind of depends on how OCD you are about pinfeathers. Me, I'm OCD! It takes me about two hours to do three birds, most of that time spent on picking pinfeathers. I'm not happy until I have literally picked over every square inch of that bird. I draw the line at doing three birds at a time, but mostly because I do them by myself (other than DH kills and removes the head). I can pluck and eviscerate all three in about half an hour, the rest of the time spent is picking out pinfeathers. I reach my limit at two hours because my back starts to give out (I'm 60, LOL).

After you've processed two or three birds, you won't forget. The main thing is getting comfortable with where to cut and what is what and where it is.

I also peel the feet and save them up, they are superb for making stock. And I now have my DH hooked on .........ummm........... rooster testicles. The first time I cooked them for him, I talked him into trying them. He took one bite and said I was NOT to throw them away again!

I just got back from an extended trip to the UK, I was amazed at the chicken from the grocery store. I not only had to remove pinfeathers, in some cases I had to pluck full feathers from the thighs.

I've been out maneuvered by my chickens. My bantam Cochin is broody so I snuck 10 eggs under her. This is day 3. There are now close to 16 eggs she's under and not all the numbers are there that are from 1-10. Lol that's what she gets for brooding in the favorite box.
