The Pita Pintas are 5 weeks old now. You can tell by the size of the combs and the size of the chicks that two are Cockerels and one is a pullet.

I have a question for you . . my brother wants to raise some meat birds other than the usual cornish crosses. Which of the breeds that you have butchered and eaten dress out the earliest and taste the best?

I have a question for you . . my brother wants to raise some meat birds other than the usual cornish crosses. Which of the breeds that you have butchered and eaten dress out the earliest and taste the best?

Pita pintas for pure breeds. Bresse get as big but we did not like them as much for taste.

They were 3.5 pounds at 16 weeks and 4.25 dressed at 20 weeks.

You can tell from the one in the back of the picture that the breast will be big on that one.

I did like the Dorking X Barred rock cross, but you would have to keep two flocks for that and they were no faster growing than the Pita Pintas. The Pinta Pintas grew faster than the EO Marraduna Basque but they are a good choice too.

To answer the earlier question about why I have these Spanish breeds, they have not been ruined for their dual purpose utility. Hatchery chickens do not have it and a lot of breeders do not care about how fast they put on meat or how many eggs they lay.

Those of us with the Pita Pintas and EO Basque know how well they lay and how fast they grow. Also, they do very well in the heat here and Pita Pintas are winter layers!

Here are my olive Egger chicks. They are predominately white but have tiny flecks

of splash. The older one is a three-month-old in the grow up in same parents

I like them!

It might be that one seems to have more brown in him than the other 2. The girl however is wonderful and kind of a sweetie too.My favorite boy is the smallest though but his personality is so fun. I think he thinks he is a Delaware because the 2 of them are the first ones to my hand all the time.

Isn't the auction that Kim goes to in Modesto or somewhere close?

The closest one I know of is actually in Escalon. That is just North East of Modesto. They do small animals on Fridays.

I hear of one in Modesto , that's probably it. My neighbor took so mutts there and ended up getting $300 one time. Probably a lot of mutts but still.

For those with lots of boys: if you're growing them out in just a boy pen, will they get less aggressive to each other?

I also found that CL are EXTREMELY great at flying to roost near the top of the building

It is time to move the boys out.

The boys will usually be ok together but will hurt the girls at that age.

Is it ok if they can see each other through the fence? It sounds like an odd question but I heard they tame down if they can't see the girls. Not sure if that's possible

Yours look slightly larger combs than mine but Ill get pics soon

They will still know they are around--they do have ears and can hear them.

It will be ok if they see each other. The cockerels will establish a pecking order so expect some feathers to fly but if you keep them together and they hatched together they usually are ok. Some Breeds are better at getting along then others.

If one of the starts hurting the other too much, process him early. Little ones are still edible. 1.5 pounds dressed used to be called a broiler.
