California - Northern

I got the report on the Silkies.

These are the bacterial findings in the bird with the yolk sac issue:

T1402559-01 1 Liver Tissue Enterococcus faecalis Rare#
Escherichia coli Rare#

T1402559-01 T1402559-01.0004 Yolk Sac Tissue Pool Enterococcus faecalis Lg#
Escherichia coli Lg#
Mixed flora Sm#

LIVER: moderate vacuolation, rare focal necrosis (1 section).
YOLK SAC: moderate caseous material with cluster of bacteria primarily adjacent to epithelium.
All other tissues were unremarkable.

He has notes suggesting the other got chilled in transport or possibly was just a failure to thrive chick, but says there was no apparent cause of death. It was one of the first to die.

Substitutions, partial orders and up to a year late.
Ah. I have heard not to expect them in a really specific time frame. I was hoping that sending the reservation now for next spring would counteract that some. I know they sell out of birds early and for months ahead a lot of years. I appreciate the heads up. I will probably still roll the dice in the hopes of finally getting the RI Whites I have been looking for, though. I will definitely not do any of the Mottled Javas or anything like that that is available other places until I see how those go, though.

Did they do sensitivity testing?

Imsure that hahas happened and those studies exist aa with anything that isn't technically labeled for "poultry" I probably shouldnt have said anything, because not all people on this forum would/could or even feel comfortable administering off labeled producta.....so to those......Don't try this at home!! Lol
I prefer Valbazen, but a couple of years ago my birds had a serious lice issue that I could not get rid of, even with dusting and cleaning every 10 days. I treated with Ivomec for worming and lice and had great results. The lice were gone and I didn't see any evidence of worms.

At least it looks like an isolated occurrence. Have they tested the others yet?

I only sent in two. The girl I talked to @ the Tulare lab said it was $120 per bird to do more than two, which my husband was not much in favor of. I figured two would be enough to give us a pretty good idea as well, so I just picked two to send in. The ones that did not die within the first day and a half are still doing great.

Don't quote me on this but I think this is something to treat the hens for if you can get specific bacteria that did it.

Someone else (I think @ronott1 ) mentioned it was something to treat the hens for (or to cull them from breeding stock). I don't know about that, but I passed on the bacteriology and the sensitivity reports to the breeder to let them know and decide how to proceed.

They might not know they can treat for it. Or what bacteria to treat for. Do you know them well enough to call the lab for more details and pass them along?

I only know because I followed the isbars story.

I don't know them well, but they seemed interested in the results of the tests, so I would think if I could get more info from the lab they'd be receptive.
