Calling ALL Dog Fosters and Non Fosters Alike! Fostering Dogs - Tips, Recommendations, and Places

Does this seem like a good idea?
Going to try to answer a few of your questions here.

I think its a great idea! Shelters always need more people to foster, it can save the lives of multiple dogs. Its a great thing you doing.

  • What breeds should we avoid?
I thin it will depend less on the breed, more on the dog. For example, I love labs, but some labs in rescue could have issues because of being surrendered, and past history. Pit Bulls and pit bull mixes can be tough, but some of the sweetest dogs are also Pit mixes. I'd say get to know the dog, maybe do a trial before you commit.

Otherwise, I don't have enough experience with fostering to answer your other questions. :p

One of those places in Seattle I like too. I think Seattle Humane. They had a lot of rabbits when I was considering fostering. They seemed really nice, and all of their rabbits were fixed and vet checked. They also had A LOT of rabbits, so I would think that would be the same for dogs too. Could probably use some fosters.
I'm not sure about PAWS, but a friend of mine had a bad experience there once. She incubated an abandoned wild Mallard egg (newbie) and it hatched. Someone contacted PAWS about the duckling, and they forced her to give it up since it was wild. Then they said that if it didn't integrate well they would euthanize it.
Not sure if that makes you want to foster more since you might be saving a life, (since it is obviously not no kill) or if it makes you want to foster less.

Thanks! I've really liked looking at the Seattle Humane site. Good to know about PAWS. I'm sorry that happened to your friend. :hugs

I think they're a good place, a lot of their rabbits were in foster homes too, so seems that they might be very open to foster homes.
Ya, she was disappointed.
Thats about all I know about those shelters, from personal experience. :)

Honestly it seems like a really bad idea with so many other pets in the home that could be eaten and killed.
Thanks for the input! Which pets in particular seem like a bad fit? Most of the small animals are kept in usually closed door rooms (such as bedrooms) and I’ve heard you can introduce current dogs.

Tiny dogs with possible reactive large dog, no bueno. Parakeets with dog you have zero history on, no bueno. Chickens with a large dog you have no history on and no formal 4 sided wooden fence, not great. Hedgehog with a large dog where both parties could be seriously injured, super not great. There are wayyyyyy too nay opportunities for things to go horribly wrong.

one wrong move, one open door, and you would never forgive yourself. Trust me, you blame yourself for the rest of your life.
