I just found out that my “white leghorn” is a meat bird and possibly Cornish x I have the same concerns as the member who wrote this thread. But mine is not a hen ...

hen or cockeral, CX are designed to live fast and die young. with a lot of coddling and feed rationing, you can get them to live a bit longer, but generally not worth it IMHO. it's too bad really, they are sweet birds.

I've heard of some people lately who have had theirs over 4 years with management of their food intake.

The runt of four broilers, Reese, is 10 1/2 months old and wants so desperately to be a " normal chicken".
Tonight she wanted held and I put her in my lap. Reese crawled her way up to roosts on my shoulder ( all 11 lbs of her).
Lol
Don't know if I can hold out too long!

How do you know it isn't a hen?

Big pink comb that young is a dead giveaway that it's a cockerel.

Just wanted to give you all an update I find it interesting, She went from being a Girl named Daisy than he was Definitely without a doubt a boy & MEATMTBIRD I named him Kurt (Cobain) ....BUT KURT IS A HEN NAMED DAISY AGAIN IT FIRS HER. She’s 13 wks and 5 days so almost 14 weeks! She’s doing great considering it’s 5 degrees out right now in NY

Few years ago I had a group of cx that I had a mix of pullets and cockerels.
Two of the pullets just did not get to size, and winter had arrived so I put them in
with my layers. One made it to about 6 months....the other about 16 months.
I was surprised the older one passed. She was going to roost, foraging, and not a heavy weight. About 3-4 eggs/week.

How did you determine that it is a female now? Did it lay an egg? Because I'm fairly certain it was male....
