Actually, no... I posted the reply before I saw the picture of yours and I'm trying to edit it, but I'm having trouble doing it, lol.

I hate to preach, really I do, it steals so much time. In this instance I will though, do yourself and your birds a favor and build them a safe run. Covered sides and top with a door no other animal can open. I let my chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys range as long as I am with them. If I'm not there they are in their runs or pens. I live in the country/woods as well and there's a whole host of animals looking for a free lunch. I have been very careful and have still had a few near misses. For your peace of mind, when you can't be there, and your bird's safety, please think about this. It doesn't have to be elaborate or very costly, it just has to be safe for your birds. Around where my runs are for the birds, I have dug trenches with my rototiller and removed the dirt, filled with lg. rocks and broken glass and then a topping of dirt and the chicken wire from the sides goes out over this, with more lg. rocks on top of that. Didn't cost but a few pennies of gas and time. How many glass jars do we recycle in a week? Here's a recycling project to keep your birds safe from anything trying to dig underneath the sides of the pen. Old CDs hung from the top of their run will keep hawks and such from trying for them. This can also work by hanging them from bushes and trees near where they are. Something a bit indelicate maybe, but human urine, collected and spread around their buildings and pens will work for some of the preditors but not all. [if you have men or boys around.....you get the idea, lol] Out of all of the above though, your eyes and your physical presence is the best safeguard there is. Okay...stepping off my soapbox now....thank-you for listening, lol. Also this is my second year as a chicken mom. My daughter is 9 and she wanted chickens. Last year we got 3 red pullets and 3 tan pullets. Then as they were older I bought an Auburn Java Rooster because I wanted to hatch chicks this year. I have my chickens free ranging because I live in the country. One by one they would go missing. Finally one night I heard a comotion. The culprit a possom. We took care of him. I have 2 reds and 1 tan left.
Oh well now...that sucks! I am so sorry to hear that! Doesn't it always figure? You have the monies and no time....then you have the time and no monies. Wow, that's been the story of my life!thank you casportpony. @ haunted55 yes this year i am building an enclosed pen 4 them. I did buy a really nice house for them when we first got them. I have nothing but time this year because i am laid off now.....![]()
