Chicken Breed Focus - Ayam Cemani

I found a guy locally that has them, trying to decide what I want to do, debating getting a dozen hatching eggs and Craig's listing the extras$$$$$ wise I think letting a perpetually broody silkie hatch and selling a few cheap on CL might be my best bet., he will sell chicks, point of lay etc. but as expected cost goes up. I would LOVE to keep a small flock but realistically I will probably have to get rid of a layer or two to make room for whatever I keep and while I legally could keep a rooster, in practical terms I can not, neighbors are great but too close to ask them to put up with that noise, cockerels have gone in the freezer soon after they get loud.

Geezer she's just like the cats lol I came out this morning to find she has discovered the heater! When I move her she just goes back and lays down haha

I found a local breeder in my area and got ten eggs from him on Memorial day weekend. I put them all in the incubator on Memorial day and I slipped two out and put them under my broody silkie today. I plan to slip the rest of them under her as it gets close to hatch time. I just didn't want her to be unable to keep all ten under her warm enough (though she'd try the little over-achiever). I figured that I'll try letting a hen raise my chicks for once. I've never hatched any under a broody before so I've always had to keep the chicks separate in a brooder until they were old enough to fend for themselves. This time I have the broody in my "nursery coop" in the run. It is one that has the wire under the coop so the chicks and momma will still be seen by the rest of the flock from day one but will be safe. Then I'll slowly let them out supervised at first. I'm so excited to have these rare birds in my flock. :D
