Chickies, Chickies, Chickies!! Meet the new additions! (Pic heavy!)

That was what I was thinking, too. So Po baby will be my little manly ball of fluff. I can live with that. :love I looked him over this evening as I was putting the youngsters in their section of the coop. The feathers on his feet are an inch and a half long already! He's so soft and fluffy, too! Hope he behaves when he grows up! :fl

Rangi, meanwhile, had a visit indoors. The first half of her visit, she sat in my arms with this look of horror on her face. By the second half of her visit, she was looking around as if wondering how far she could get if she flew for it. :love Of course, she went back out with the rest of the babies, as much as I would have loved to take her back up to my room.

Oh, and in related news, we've finally gotten the second layer of cinderblocks in on the coop addition, which means in 48-72 hours, we can start doing the actual building! :celebrate The coop addition was for the babies, if you wondered, though it will be attached to the old coop and eventually there will be a chicken door between them. :D

What? An update with no pictures???

But, seriously, thanks for the update.

I hope they're doing alright in their new home! How's Hika Ma?

Hika Ma has gone completely human shy at this point, but I suppose that's fine as I'd prefer that to human aggressive.

I just went out to find everyone but the boys and Ihi wandering around outside their fence, though the big girls paid them no attention whatsoever. I'm still worried about whether they'll come back after free-ranging, so I plan to continue trying to keep them in their little section for now, but it would appear as though integration is not going to be all that difficult this year, anyway.

And sadly, it seems any shred of friendliness that Whiri, Marama, and Ihi had was wiped away when I had 'help' getting the babies in the other night. My 'help' was in the way the whole time, kept trying to do the catching herself instead of letting me do it, and pretty much terrorized the poor babies until I finally managed to get them all. Marama has been the worst since. She won't come within ten feet of me if she can help it. It saddens me that I have apparently lost any chance of her being a friendly bird. :( I wish people would stop trying to help me and just let me do what I need to do. :rant

But I digress. The good news is Rangi and Roha are both pretty lovey and have started to come over to me when they see me now. :love I didn't know what to expect of an Ancona, but I definitely didn't expect any Leghorn to be as friendly as Roha is.

(I know, another update without pictures. I haven't been feeling well today, but I'll see about getting some mid-week pictures of everyone tomorrow. :) )

Aw, I'm sorry about that. Yeah, sometimes people don't get it, what harm they can do when they are only trying to help.

And I hope you'll feel better soon!

It has been a tough few days for me (but I'm not going to go into detail about that here), so my apologies for posting yet another update with no pictures. I will definitely have pictures on Sunday as they will be 10 weeks old that day. :)

The babies are fine, so no need to worry about them. They are flying out of their pen more and more frequently, and I am on the verge of just letting them go, but I'm still not confident that they will come back to the coop at night if they go out to free-range with the big girls. Still fighting with mostly shy birds after the other night, though Rangi and Roha are still absolutely delightful. I go into the chick pen and call for Rangi and without fail, every time, Roha comes charging before Rangi has the chance to. Rangi's still a shoulder-hopper and a lap sitter, and if neither is available she will hop onto the tallest nearby structure that she can find. My little spotty bird. :love

Oh, and their voices! They have little teenage chicken voices now! Not quite a peep, not quite a cluck, and lots of cracking as they talk. It's such a silly, awkward time for them. The bantam boys are still peeping, of course, but I think their voices are just going to be higher pitched. Speaking of, I got a cute video of Po crowing yesterday morning that I will upload... eventually. He still pretty much sounds like a squeaky toy.

We're supposed to have some cool weather from this weekend on, so hopefully that means my coop addition will be built fairly quickly. My hope is that we can finish it in time for it to become the chick area, rather than this gawky group of teenagers being crammed into the cage they've been sleeping in every night, though who knows how well that plan will work. Oh, well.

Happy Sunday! I'll be getting pictures uploaded... eventually! At 10 weeks old, they are still flying out of their little sanctuary, though I've noticed now that they are immediately turning around and trying to figure out how to get back in. So I think I will be working on a way for them to get in and out without letting the big girls get in, and I have some ideas as to how that will happen.

More honking than peeping is coming from the youngsters. Gosh, they're getting so big!

Oh, yes, I will upload that video of Po as well! :D Everything will be posted before long.
