Chicks won't stop trying to eat pine shavings

Or to gorge on something new.
I don't put grit out in a dish, even for the older birds...
....I occasionally add some to daily scratch grains spread out in run.

I bought about a 2 gallon bag of granite grit from the local mill, they put it in their chicken scratch. Ran it thru a colander with 1/16" holes. Bagged the smaller stuff for the chicks and sprinkle some over a chunk of sod in the brooder during the second week.

i have been sprinkling it but i went to the dish. I think I'll sprinkle again. I had put it on their sod toy and any grubs or mealworms the got. At what age do you feed the scratch mix? I have been very cautious about anything but chick feed.

I feed 20% Flock Raiser crumbles(run thru blender for the first couple weeks).
I get cracked grain chick starter to use as chick scratch after about 2 weeks,
sparingly.... mostly to 'ramp train' them.
They can get 'regular' scratch with the adults(if they can get it) once they are integrated at about 4-6 weeks.
