Christian Topic: Bible Translations - which do you like?

This is true!! But don't throw the baby out with the bath water. It is easier to understand what Gods word means if you are closer to the original writings.
We have yet to find a translation that doesn't use the term Easter. God says not to even utter the name of another god, so why would he include a pagan goddess name in His word for us to say an repeat? Men have many different ways of translating, and none are perfect!
Seek the truth not the convenience.

YES to a born again personal experience with Jesus, Prefer King James or amplified bibles. DH has one of Jimmy Swaggarts study bibles and it is really good, He also has a Dakes, that if I hit a stumbling block on something I usually go to it. marrie

I don't believe that being "born again"/"saved" has anything to do with the denomination or church that you attend. Although, there are certainly denominations/churches/religions that do not teach the truth of the Bible regarding being born again. People who attend those churches have to find the truth through Bible reading or other people outside of their church. There are other churches that teach the truth of the Bible from the pulpit. Some churches/people twist scripture to make it work for them.

To me, being born again or saved is when you ask the Lord/God into your heart, ask his forgiveness of your sins and profess that Jesus is your Lord and Savior. You then begin a daily walk with Him and living according to His word. You become His child.

It frustrates me that the term 'Christian' is used so loosely in our society. People call themselves 'Christian' all the time but do not live a Believer lifestyle according to God's word. I like the term Believer, as was used in the Bible, as most people who use that truly are living the life as God intended and wanted for us. That means voting for scriptural values and upholding those values in our everyday lives.

Do we fail or sin? Yup, we are all human - the only perfect human was Jesus. We need to ask for forgiveness from our Heavenly Father when we sin (what is sin? That's another topic... I believe that sin is a willful transgression against the KNOWN law of God). How do we know God's laws? By reading His word and having regular devotions and prayer time with Him. Yah, I know... there is tons of theological debate here I'm just trying to keep it real simple.

I like the NIV but keep the KJV close and use other sources to help me understand the verses I'm reading. Strongs Concordance is a great help. I totally agree that people should read and study which ever version speaks to them and brings them closer to God. But, you do want to make sure that it's as close to the original version (Hebrew for the Old Testament and Greek/Aramaic for the New Testiment) as possible. There are "Bibles" out there that have pretty much nothing written in them that was God inspired.

wow - interesting reading so far - I like it! Everyone's kept it respectful and I like that even more

In the end I guess it all comes down to one thing: When it comes your time to meet Your Maker - it's between you and Him - do you know Him in the way you desired in your life and if not, I believe, (agian..this is MY way of thinking now..) that you will stand before Him and be judged however, you will be given the final opportunity to accept Him into your heart and make amends / repent and seek salvation -even if its with your dying breath.

I watched my dad take his last breath and I can tell you - if you've never watched someone on their death bed in the days before they pass away - I assure you SOMEONE is there... SOMEONE is with them as they get ready to pass over (feeling that lump in my throat again...

but in a good way.. trying not to cry here). My father was talking to someone - and smiling all the time and nodding his head. So with my last breath in me, I know someone was there to take him home and he wasnt alone in that journey.

Was it Jesus? I dont know.. but I'll know when its my time..oh yes I will!

I'm grateful to a Bible and having several different versions for studying is a bonus. As far as the translations go and the Hebrew language, I rely on the Holy Ghost to teach me! (to answer the question of considering onself "born again"):
I do consider myself "born again" but many have referred to me a Jesus Freak and that's okay by me! Tongue talking, fire breathing, water baptized, Holy Ghost filled, etc.

We translated quite a bit of the bible from orginal greek and latin texts in my ancient language classes.... some things don't say what the King James version says they do.

One problem with your statement is that there are no originals. There haven't been any since they were written. Can't God preserve the words as he wants them to be in the English language?

Jeremiah was told by God to make a copy of the original which God gave him at the first. Paul spoke to the Jewish people in Hebrew, it was translated into Greek as the book of Acts. Which has more authority. The best question is, what is your final authority? Is it man or God? There are many good books. Oprah can suggest any number of them which can show you the light. I don't need God to live a good life. Any book will do. But if I want a life with God I need his book. Which is written by God. If it is written by God it has to be without error or God had nothing to do with it. Its just that simple. Yes some things are hard in the KJV. The apostal Peter said about the teachings of the apostal Paul in II Peter 3:16 "As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood,." Study is sometimes hard. Words and meanings are are hard, but the bible itself will define meaning by context and usage. The first thing Satan did was to convince Eve that God didn't mean what he said.

Forgive me if I come on too strong but I've been teaching the word of God enough years to know the difference between the real and the counterfeit.

what do you mean by this statement? Are you saying that one religion is the only true religion, one bible the only true bible - because thats how I interpreted that sentence.

The bible was translated and broken up - given to several different scribes to decipher, and passed along years and years, adding to stories along the way - which is why there are so many different passages that reference the same occurrances but are worded differently throughout the Old Testament - this is proven with Moses's accounts, which his stories alone account for the majority of the Old Testament.
