We got some real snow today! A few inches! This isn't good for our fruit trees, which started to bud in the false spring, but I am excited to get some snow-chicken pictures tomorrow!

The chickens have been locked in the coop because 1) I saw a Cooper's Hawk a week ago trying to hunt them, 2) it is snowy and I don't want the silkies to get wet, and 3) my puppy Rosie chases after any chicken that gets loose, and I don't want her to cause any serious accidents. But they are happy, I have been letting them snack in flock blocks and tomorrow they will have fresh fodder!

Today was the first day of the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) but because it was so overcast and snowy, I didn't see many birds. Hopefully it will clear up a bit tomorrow so the birds can come out!

There are 15 eggs left in the incubator! I took out a bunch of dude and one bloodring a couple days ago, but the rest look alive and well. I am very pleased with this incubator!

That's it for me. What has everybody else been doing?
Ooo, nice snow! I'm hoping to get some snow tonight... it's in the forecast! I think it is going to get down to around 3 degrees F one of these coming nights, so poor chickens.... and all our trees and flower bulbs that thought Spring had come. There was some thunder and lightning earlier (it started when I was on a run with my brothers, though, so it wasn't very welcome). The chickens have been laying about 5-8 eggs a day lately! Although I'm not sure if that will continue with the freezing weather!

Let's hope they can keep their bodies warm enough to keep up with all the eggs :fl

Enjoy your snow, I'd love pictures with your new camera when it comes!

I got about an inch of snow! The chickens are barely venturing out of their coop. When I let them out this morning they refused to walk in it and were trying to fly everywhere!

Here are some snowy pictures of one of our dogs, Rocket, in the snow! (Taken with my phone, though) The dogs love running around and eating snow at the same time!

Ah, Rocket is so cute! Rosie (my puppy) loves the snow too! She comes in all soaked and messy, and I tell her she looks like a street dog :p

My chickens, like yours, are simply NOT fans of the snow! It is several inches deep, and when they fall in they panick. Honestly, it is funny to watch! They only went out of their run because I placed the fodder and food outside! I wonder if they will get used to it, what do you think?

Maybe they'll get a little used to it... some of mine have. Broi(Welie), Tiger(GL wyandotte), Starburst(GLW), and Phoenix(EE) seem to be the bravest in it! Yesterday I discovered that they had made a secret nest in their coop! So I ended up getting 14 eggs! Some where frozen solid, though. I also found one from Distarki(EE) outside in their run area!

I wish they understood that hidden nests are not practical in winter! Oh well, I hope they had fun keeping their secret! :p

Saturday is hatch day! I put the eggs in lockdown yesterday, and I'm expecting a couple early chicks tomorrow!

Schedule:
- Chicks hatch around the 20th
- Rehome the mixes
- 5 Black Australorps and 3 Golden-laced bantam Cochins coming in from Dunlap on the 24th
- Pick up 20 Heritage Rhode Island Reds on March 1st
- Pick up Barred Holland chicks and maybe eggs around May

I still want to try out meat birds and raising started pullets this year, but turkeys will have to wait a year or two. I'll have enough on my hands. :(

But we are considering trying ducks again!

Ooo! I'm excited for hatch day! I can't wait to see pictures of all the little living pom poms!!! Too bad the turkeys will have to wait, but I think it's a good choice!
Ducks are awesome!!! :wee
