We got them at the Maryland Chicken Swap this past weekend, the sellers were a young teen boy and his dad who are switching their flock to another breed. I never intended to have an 'ornamental' breed since we are basically into chickens for eggs, but they are very sweet girls. There has been some tail-feather pulling which we are treating, and they seem to be adjusting well to their temporary quarantine pen in our basement. I love their legs and feet, they look like they are wearing those UGG boots that have been so popular.

About when can I expect them to begin laying? They are about 16 weeks, give or take.

Any other information on their care would also be helpful....like once quarantine is over can I just integrate them into the established flock? Can they free range with everyone else? Do their feet need special attention due to the feathers?

Thanks shawnadoodlebug. Once they get all their tail feathers back I will choose the best one or two and they will be the ones we would show. I like that they seem to be quiet, and their voices are interesting, kind of low and husky almost a honk rather than squawking or clucking.

Thanks, but I don't think I could part with her! Her color is pure white. She's so soft and seems to love it when I hold her close and pet her. Everytime I look at her, her legs and feet seem more and more feathered! Not bad for a hatchery bird!

Mine are 8 weeks and haven't started crowing. I'm sure on my cockerels, though, because their combs and wattles started growing and turning red at around 3/4 weeks and are noticeably larger than the pullets, who still have tiny combs and no wattles. I have 1 cockerel (out of 5) who has already started jumping on the girls (guess he's just an early bloomver. lol!), but none of the others have. What is leading you to believe yours are roosters? If it's their combs and wattles or pointy hackle and saddle feathers, then they probably are roosters. Some roosters just don't get hit by their hormones until much later.

Yes, maybe they are just late bloomers? I had posted pics of them a couple months ago and the consensus was that they were cockerels, maybe I should post pics again? I don't really see any saddle feathers or pointy hackle feathers yet, but their combs and wattles are definitely larger then everyone else and very red.
