It definitely pays off starting out with nice birds, that is for sure. Like the old addage goes, you pay in what you pay out.
Your calicos are really coming along good though, I don't think it will be too long before you have some beautiful big butts of your own!

I already have a splash mottled project underway though...I'm just looking for plain old splash and black cochins to make some good blues.
I appreciate it though.

I've posted this over on the Genetics thread, also, but thought I'd ask other Cochin Breeders what they think. When I got my pair of Golden Laced Bantam Cochins earlier this year, I waited a full 3 weeks before I started collecting eggs to hatch. Out of the first eggs I collected, these two little guys hatched. Obviously, Mom was still fertile from some other roo, as the pair were kept by themselves once I got them. Any ideas as to who the Daddy(s), is? Jazz hatched 5/22; Calypso hatched 5/26. I think I'm going to keep Calypso - his colors are very intriguing and I want to see how he matures. The breeder I got my pair from also raises and shows Birchen, Mottled, Partridge, and Brown Red, among other colors.

WOW! Calypso has some massive food feathering on him! if only i could take another roo here, i'd love to take in Jazz for a project bird! i'm thinking the dad may have been from the brown red. have you asked the breeder which pen they could have been from or were they in a pen with all the colors they breed?

Thank you for starting this thread. I love giant cochins especially the roos!!!

We have a roo who we were told was a pullet. We got him when he was almost 4 months old and named him Sylvia.

Later as he grew more I was beginning to wonder if she was a he. I posted a few pics and the folks of BYC all told me that my Sylvia was a rooster.
They helped me to name him and I picked Otis. It suits him really well.
Here he is the day I discovered that he was a roo

Here is my big boy Otis now. He is a blue with lemon and charcoal colored neck hackle feathers.

He is huge!!!! And he looks like a big Teddy bear walking around the yard.
Everyone loves him

I edited my post because I have a question.
I know that Otis is not show quality by far but I was wondering will he ever look more like the pictures of some of the mature roos posted to this thread? He doesn’t seem to have the large sickle feathers and the rest of his tail doesn't look like the others either. Is this because of his age 1 year old or because of inferior breeding?
Thanks
