Cochin Thread!!!

Quote: there are threads for most breeds and varieties here on byc... the bantam wyandottes aren't much larger than the cochins (taller yes) but they have more muscling, which is why they weigh more. (I sold all mine recently, in an attempt to thin the flock some).

I thought I read here on Backyard Chickens that the cochins are big birds, large fowl? Wouldn't the bantam wyandottes be bantam sized? I am very confused. I wanted big chickens and bought Cornish cross at a few days old and just found out from reading here on Backyard Chickens that the Cornish cross are not meant to lay eggs, they are meant to be eaten, meat birds. So then I decided I wanted to get cochins and you say the bantam wyandottes are bigger than the cochins? Please, please explain.

The ultimate breed I'd like to own would be docile enough to be handled and as big as possible. Thanks, Sylvia

I have bantam and large cochins. They come in both sizes .The pics I posted above are large fowl. They range as adults around 8lbs for girls and 11 for boys. My big blue boy is around 10 lbs. I can carry him all over like a dog. The bantam cochins are just a couple lbs. I would do some breed research on here or google, so you know for sure what you want. There is a lot of info on here for you. Its taught me a lot.

The bird you are asking about is a Birchen, however there is some kind of red or even patterned leakage going on in the black feathering below his cushin.
