Maybe one day... I've just got too many projects going right now!

I went to that thread and I think i've found my nest bit of eye candy. I was always a sucker for crele birds.

Ok Steve, as long as you replied, what would you do with this guy? He's my barred split to silkied rooster that came from your eggs. What do you make of the solid black feathers?

Interestingly, his mate (same clutch) doesn't have any solid colored feathers:

Your roo had a barred dad X black mother(reason for the black feathers) and is Barred(single gene), breed him the the hen and you will get some roos without the black feathers. You will also get some lighter roos that carry the double barring gene.

What would you guys suggest as the best color (pref bantam) for a newbie to breeding/showing to get their feet wet? I have some bantam MF project birds and I know THAT's not it! LOL
My guess is white, because you don't have color faults to deal with, but how the heck to maintain them as part of a real backyard flock is beyond my imagination. I have some dirty chickies out there right now! And I feed scratch, so I think that's a no-no for whites??? What would be your next suggestion?

Thanks!
~Terry

If you're just starting I wouldn't recommend using blacks or whites. The competition is so heavy is those two colors that you may get frustrated easily. The whites require being penned up indoors to keep their feathers from turning colors from dirt or sun. I leave my mottleds outside and their color and condition seem to hold up very well. The blue mottleds tend to fade as the summer goes on however. Partridge, gold laced and a few others are dark and should hold up to the outdoors. There are not a lot of these out there so you will need to go to a good quality breeder. Be sure to buy the best birds that you can afford. If you dont you will be kicking yourself and probably end up having to buy all over. Just my opinion and observations over the years

THanks! That's what I was thinking.
I would love to be able to have my MF's as a project and another already show-worthy variety that doesn't need so much work! I love COLOR, but wasn't sure, like you said, which hold up well to outdoors. Maybe if I could find some really good Mottleds I could kill two birds with one stone (figuratively of course!

) Are they any harder to show than say a black or blue because of their color pattern?

My ultimate goal is lavender barred silkied, but in the meantime, blue silkied will do - they're easier!
