Cochin Thread!!!

Ah, decisions, decisions. I've seen your birds. You should have no problem selling more extra pullets when the next round of culling begins!

apc, are you looking for bantams or LF?

I'm going to be culling some of my older BBS LF Cochin hens that will be sold as pairs with young cockerels. These pairs will be going to swaps that are coming up, the first one in Burlington. The hens are still laying, but I'm keeping babies from these girls for breeders. These hens are in their 3rd year and are still laying. 2 black, 2 blue, 2 splash.

Here is a photo of my guy - I don't have a lot of experience with this breed - he wouldn't stay still since they are still cranky about the weather here.....

Thank you. I know I can sell the pullets anytime I want. I am breeding some Black pullets to a Columbian to get some Birchen looking birds. I have a breeding plan for a few of those chicks with the best wing type for next year. Hope to be able to work the Burlington swap meet next month for the club.

I got these chicks from Welp hatchery friday. It looks like I have 1 barred, 2 partridge, and 2 gold laced?? I first I thought the all black chick was black, but now its getting gold feathers. They dont have (Standard) Gold laced cochins, I ordered 5 assorted standard(Giant) cochin pullets (so maybe they're working on the color and I got 2?)
They have listed: Barred, Black, Blue, Buff, Partridge, Silver(laced), and white. Can anyone tell what colors I have?

Mary,
Frizzles can be shown, they arent a breed or variety of chicken. It more or less describes the feathers of one breed. Any breed can be a frizzle, and any variety of that breed. This is what my SOP says about frizzles;

Bantam SOP:
Frizzle bantams may be shown in any breed set forth in this Standard and are to be judged for shape, station and color pattern under the breed, type and variety shown on the exhibitor entry blank. (Example: Buff Cochin Frizzle, White Polish Frizzle, Black Wyandotte Frizzle, etc.)

No Frizzle bantam shall compete for awards under the various other breed & bantam varieties. However, a Frizzle bantam may compete in any of the six classes as provided under the rules of the ABA.

All sections of the specimen should conform to the shape description of the breed type under consideration. The plumage color description should conform to the color plumage description of breed and variety involved.

Feathers should be uniformly frizzled throughout the plumage area.

Preference should be given to specimens having well and evenly curled feathers over the entire body, with the exception of the main tails, sickles, primaries, and secondaries, which should curl at their extremities only. The feathers should be long, broad and crisp, each feather with a backward curl, the curl as close, even, and profuse as possible.

APA SOP:

Frizzle bantams may be shown in any breed and variety set forth in this SOP. All sections of thr bird being exhibited must conform to the shape description and the color description of the breed and variety under consideration.

Frizzles may be shown in any breed and variety set forth in the SOP. All sections of the bird should conform to the shape description of the breed. The plumage color should conform to the color plumage description of the breed and variety involved. A Frizzle of any recognized breed may compete for class champion as provided under the rules of the APA.
