Cochin Thread!!!

i have a splash mottled. Best of both worlds! I am crossing him with my best black mottled girls. I have 6 eggs developing under a broody now with another 13 under 2 new broodies. Going to mark all the eggs tomorrow and then split them between that pair and my other pair of broody mottled girls. Of course, now that it is in the 40-50's temp wise, everyone goes broody! LOL. I have 5 broodies currently......yay me

At least it makes hatching of eggs easier.....

WHAT?? I'm NOT looking for "self promotion"!! I want an honest critique of my birds so I can learn and improve them. Please excuse me for stepping on your toes, your highness.

Your mottled have good type and will probably develop into pretty nice birds. Your splash birds are hard to tell because I only see the back ends of many of them. Only 1 profile that allows a good look at that bird. Good eye color and comb.

OK. Here are better pics of my Splash:

One of my Mille Fleur pullets just went broody on 6 eggs. I sure don't need more birds but alot of folks have been askeing for Pullets/hens to go with all the roos I've been "culling" their way. What are the chances that these pullet's egg will have any female chicks? - 50/50, ha!
I am begining to tell which pullets have better type and have a couple to sell but still have alot more roos to part with. I know it isn't a rare problem but I just wanted to vent my frustration and having too many roos is better than having no Cochins at all.

I went to a poultry show this past Saturday and saw alot of very nice birds. None were more apealing to me that the Cochins. There is a breed/breeds for everyone and Cochins are the one for me.

fortunately, even with adding a two new roosters this year and hatching out 5 of 7 BOYS this year, I still have more boys than girls. I am growing everyone out over winter (they are 3-4 months old now) and will cull down to best couple younguns in Spring.

I can't wait to get some blue mottleds out of the new (old) splash mottled boy and my best black mottled girls. REALLY excited about that. I need to add my blue mottled hen back into the breeding group, which will hopefully get some splash mottled out. I want to really work on the blue mottleds this coming year. They are just not that common and the ones you see are often NOT anything to write home about.

Although the ones posted on here a couple page back were quite nice

I love my cochins. I have Bantams and Standards. Each has their specialities that just grab ahold of you. Once that happens you are stuck raising them for life.

I have to get some pictures tomorrow. Today my big Black Roo(JJ) had his entire tail mound fall out. All he has is a red tail nub.

I was hoping to show him late this Fall, but he has been molting for 2 months now and looks like it is going to take all Winter. First his neck molted, then back, then chest, etc. Each time the feathers grow back completely before the next section molts out.

He had his tail left and still has his cushion, legs, and underside to go.

JJ(Jerry Jr) is a 100% pure StarCochin. He is the son of Jerry, the last Black Roo I bought from Beth and Jerry Smith, and T2, a hen I hatched from eggs I got from Beth a few years ago. Yes I named my Roo after the people I bought him from and then named the next generation Jr. I have 3 Black Cockerels from this year that I am waiting to grow out. At almost 5 months old they still have alot of growing/filling out to do. That is the problem with this line. They are slow about everything, except eating.

The 2nd picture of a male is the best Male as can be told by a picture.. The color on the first hen is my favorite. The best hen for type is the last one.
