Connecticut!

I'm sure the OWNERS were warned, I phrased that poorly-comes from trying to work and read BYC at the same time! I agree that the dog is being punished for the owner's failings-that's why this is no-win. The story made it sound like the owner was given a couple of chances to fix things but didn't. So either the dog is removed (since the owner can't contain her) or the chickens keep getting killed. Unfortunately that the dog gets removed, but at least she's not getting put down. Maybe her new owner will be able to take good care of her and keep her from running loose. And I hope that owner doesn't get to have dogs anymore!

Luke13:34 :

Quote:
Why was the DOG warned? The dog does not speak or read English. Warn the OWNERS! Poor dog is doing what dogs do and get sent away because it's owner is too stupid to keep it penned up?

Welcome to chicken-keeping and BYC from Suffield!

While it may be true that roosters encourage each other to crow, it is NOT true that solo roosters will crow less. This I know from experience.

If I were you, I would not wait to get rid of the boys until a neighbor complains b/c that will cause problems with the town that you really don't want. I learned that one the hard way.

Sorry for your aggravation.

thanks! I probably will have to get rid of all three in the end, but I'm hoping.... I actually just tried separating two of the roos - tried leaving my favorite (OE) in with the hens first, but he still kept going, so I switched him with my second favorite (Mille non-bearded) and the Mille hasn't made a peep (the OE is still crowing away though

even though he can't see the hens and the bearded picks on him) ... fingers crossed that I can keep the Mille ...

UPDATE: with just removing the OE and bearded roo for one night the Mille has barely made a peep all night and this morning!!

He was the quietest one of them all to begin with but already he's crowing about a 1/4 of what he had been!!

All I can say about dog's killing chickens is>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> definitely the owners fault!!!!

I have had to call the State Police many times in the last 8 months due to my neighbor neglecting his animals. His poor dogs are left outside on a deck piled with feces, no water, no food. They jump off and run to my house for 2 reasons, (1) they are thristy and take a drink from my multi ponds and streams, and (2) They are starving and kill my chickens.

Don't get me wrong I am very very very upsett about this. But, I refuse to make the animal control put the dogs to sleep. They offered and I declined. Instead I've built 6 ft high fences around my chicken pasture and inside that pasture I have built more pens 6ft high too. I have not lost too many birds since then.

They never did put any of the 7 different dogs to sleep this man has owned over the last year. All except one have been seized. 3 Were adopted out, 1 was given to a family member and three still remain. I just call the animal control officers to come pick up the dogs and believe it or not they look to those officers as their best friends b/c they know when they show up they get food, water, and clean kennels for a few days.

The part I don't understand is why do they keep giving him back his dogs? I've asked this question and said on several occasions how could you knowingly give this man back his dogs when he does no good by them?? They do not answer me direct. All they say is, well legally if he keeps coming and paying the fines we instill on him, we have no legal grounds to stand on to seize the dogs. OKAY, does anyone else on this forum think that is crazy? Or is it just me shaking my head in disbelief and then I see this poor husky on TV that has only done this 2x and they are going to put it down? WOW

My chickens are driving me crazy. You would think that having "nice" breeds like easter eggers and cochins it would be simple, but oh no. They're putting on a production of West Side Story right now with the EEs playing the Sharks and the Cochins playing the Jets. It's too much.
