Consolidated Kansas

I know, since I am new to chickens I'm outside what feels like ALL THE TIME! It's been so cold! I have used to have a horse...but it only took a fraction of the time to care for Katy! And I'm such a wimp this year! We had such a hot Summer which was horrible too since I had to be out in it all the time! and Fall...I feel sorry for my birds...and the cows/wildlife/...everything that has to survive out in the cold!
Good to see you back on the Kansas thread.
Yeah that wind and cold was insane today. I was not a happy camper dealing with the hoses today either. I guess when they get cold they decide that is the time to fold over and bend and get caught on things. So far it hadn't been too bad but after today I'm done having fun with them. I have several of the shrinking hoses and plan to change to them for winter. I just hadn't bothered until now.
I also hauled my Christmas tree in from out in the sea van. I have it sitting in the front room but haven't started decorating yet. I almost dread it.
I'm still waiting on several Christmas packages and I'm loosing patience with a few companies I have used several times in the past. I have had messed up orders and items ordered in November that haven't arrived yet.

I found a dandelion blooming in my backyard today...

That's pretty crazy! I had seen some tiny blades of grass a week or so coming up in the area where I have the field closed off now resting from the sheep & goats eating it to the ground. I couldn't believe what I was seeing either. I think things are kind of confused due to the weather staying so warm for so long.

I'm so glad that wind finally died down this evening while I was out feeding. It was cold but it would have been twice as bad if the wind had still been blowing. My birds all act like they're starving to death when I go feed them every day & I know they're not.

What's nearly as crazy is that I have a turkey hen that has started her spring laying. She is super confused. I have gotten 3 eggs in 4 days. They quit really early this year so I guess their systems are all confused. I am NOT ready to start hatching turkeys yet.

Boy that's aggravating! Especially when u order that far in advance! I'm going to Missouri for Christmas this year! I'm originally from there. My mom and BFFs all live there. Will be having Xmas early here with the family b4 I go "back home"!

All 3 of my baby Araucanas are laying - usually 2 or 3 a day, and I'm getting an egg or two a day from the young Orps. 3 of the 4 are laying, just not a lot of eggs.

I'm surprised that I'm getting this many eggs from them. Of course that will come to a halt if it gets dark and cold out.

I'm surprised you are as well. Congrats on the layers. My araucanas have started laying a couple eggs a day. I had an egg eater and trimmed everyone's beak. Now I'm getting eggs!
Many of my breeders and starting to lay fairly regularly. I have certain types that are still in molt and some that just aren't laying at all. I have plenty of eggs though so I can't complain too much. Sure wish the feed bill was lower though.
It must have something to do with all these geese out there!

Yeh, I turned off my coop light to let my girls have a Winter's rest and accidentally through a couple of them in molt!!

I have a light in my coop & I'm still hardly getting any eggs. I have had to stop selling any till they all pick up again because I barely have enough for myself right now.
