No cats ergo not cat food, but I've been doing the kitchen scraps and garden scraps for over 15 years. There are a few no nos- No raw potatoes or potato peels (sweet potato peels are ok) and no avocado skins, but everything else is fair game, in moderation.

Apples can disrupt the laying cycle, and too many apple seeds can be mildly toxic, but ohmygosh...anyone with kids knows the insane amount of foods that hit the floor in a day. Or the couch. Or the floor And the couch.
Cheerios...I'm talking to you! 🤨

I don't give my chickens my cat food. They steal it. I used to feed my cat outside but that was a disaster. Now I feed her inside, but they have a sixth sense for when I've left the door ajar and will sneak in so fast...

I think your attitude and my own are very similar. I'm 73 and I'm still going out and doing my necessary errands. I've never been one to use hand sanitizer (I think -- in conventional circumstances -- it will breed more antibiotic resistant bacteria). I have my hands in the compost constantly. I handle the poo in my chickens' coop. ...and I can be family casual about whether or not I wash my hands after those things. I think using an immune system is building an immune system and an important part of preparing for something like this.

But, let's face it. Suicides and car accidents aren't contagious. I think this country takes an astoundingly callous attitude to how many gun-related deaths there are every year here, but, again, not contagious. This is a highly contagious virus. And we don't know the long term effects yet. Ebola, another but different corona virus, can stay in survivors eyeballs for years and re-emerge. That doesn't mean Covid-19 will have residual effects for survivors but We. Simply. Don't. Know. We need to be aware, informed, taking proper precautions AND confident as we continue to do our best in this challenge.

I guess you've got it in hand but there are too many listening to a certain public individual who wants this to magically go away and is downplaying it deliberately to avoid responsibility. Those folks are demonizing the media for presenting information they need to have and to heed. There's a balance somewhere in there. We've all got to try to strike its and a healthy positive attitude for our own health and for one another.
Hmmm, how do I like and dislike a post at the same time? 🤔

Please wash your hands after handing the less desirable parts of chicken keeping. A strong immune system is not a safety net against parasites.
I compost too and am not concerned about the microbials there but round worms and parasites in humans are... well...:sick

I agree with the rest, though please be careful when out and about right now.

I air fry my potato peels and give them to my chickens, is that okay? I rarely eat potatoes because they are my Achilles’ heel and I’d blow up like a balloon if I ate as many potatoes as I’d like.
They have to be cooked. My chickens eat baked potatoes. Last night they got boiled red potatoes with the skin.

I have 28 chickens right now 🙈 my husband wants me to hatch more too for meat and eggs.

I was thinking of postponing my HAL when this first started but my husband said why? If anything we may need more chickens. So he has contributed to my soon full blown egg hatching addiction. I am still hoping for a small amount of males so I don’t feel bad cooking them. My first batch is still looking like I got 99% female. But I’ll keep checking in a month or two. Maybe instead of eating them I can sell em as POL pullets, hmm 🤔

Just want to say my daughter "got upset" because I didn't have a pad lock on my chickens! So I ordered a pad lock, and a motion detector that covers 24 feet and has a receiver about 1,000 feet away. So I think I will be protected-of course with my 38 special as backup. I think there will be a lot of empty store hungry people.

As far as I know cooked peels are ok, just like when we eat a baked potato skin.

I did a ton of research early on because I also had a farmer's market garden and had plenty of scraps to add to my compost pile and to give to the chickens. Potato peels and avocado skins were the two consistent things listed on university pages, cooperative extensions, animal science programs, and books.

Have to admit, I never thought of cooking the skins for the birds, but I also don't generally peel my potatoes as I don't boil potatoes. Instead I roast or shred them, skins and all, and eat the skins... especially on red or purple potatoes.
