I started quail the October before we found out about covid. Thinking I could be a bit more self sufficient even though I live in an apartment. With the last two batches of White-wing Pharaohs, I ended up with 3 English whites. (they look just like Texas A&M but are not. My nurse told me about one of her patients. I had given him a couple quail to process himself once before, as well as some extra eggs which had given him such joy. As it had brought back old memories of his mom fixing quail for Christmas.I hope this post isn't insensitive to those who keep quail as pets. I can see how they would be excellent companions. I, too, often find myself becoming attached.
No tractor supply or pet stores near you??? Chicken starter for the first 8 - 10 weeks, Layer crumbles afterwards. You can order it online, and have it delivered.I give them eggs and yoghurt occasionally.

Hahaha!!Tractor supply is a company? No. Pet shops have only the reptile insects. They usually don't have food for poultry . Of course I give them those things apart from the usual Scrabble for chickens I buy from the guy that gave me the quails. I buy the good quality, no genetically modified grain. The pet shop ignores even the term game bird feed. It was fun though and educational to search for all those things. I carefully manipulate protein with the nutritional yeast. And I prefer eggs yoghurt and natural stuff as treats. After all, I eat those eggs myself. So far they seem fine ( 8 months). And they lay every day. the eggs are fine too. They have cardboard boxes (with ramps so they won't waste and make a mess ) with dirt, sea sand and wood ash and of course a cuttlebone. They are so cute up and down the ramp all day.No tractor supply or pet stores near you??? Chicken starter for the first 8 - 10 weeks, Layer crumbles afterwards. I'm not in an agricultural zone. I'm in a city of one million. I must go really far to find poultry stuff. I got lucky with the quails. No tractor supply or pet stores near you???
Personally, I do not throw away the gizzard or heart. Sometimes I throw away the livers. I also keep the feet along with the spines, to make a dang good bone broth. I save the pieces of liver, the gizzard, gonads, and under developed eggs, to make my dog a treat once in a while. Why waste anything??I saw a video yesterday. How to process chicken. Is it true you throw away the heart and the liver? We use them in many dishes.
We buy heart and liver and fry with rice, we make Christmas stuffing with rice and liver, and soups with them and wings ( I got hungry now just thinking about)Personally, I do not throw away the gizzard or heart. As we process the quail, the dogs watch and wait, and they receive the hearts, livers, and anything else we can identify as an organ and not intestines and stomach. We don’t process a ton, a few a month maybe, and we throw the heads, wings, guts in the far corner of the yard bordering the swampy woods, and in a day or less it’s all gone due to the insects and stray cats.We buy heart and liver and fry with rice, we make Christmas stuffing with rice and liver, and soups with them and wings ( I got hungry now just thinking about)![]()
Yes, poultry bones are dangerous for dogs. But the wings make such a lovely soup.
