Cream Legbar Hybrid Thread

I have a question about crossing blue egg layers (CL) with a brown egg layer. Will all the offspring lay green eggs or will there only be a percentage that lays green eggs?

Thanks for bearing with me :)

Thank you! So the offspring will get a brown egg copy and a blue egg copy which combines to make green? Unless the CL has a brown egg copy which will then lead to some brown egg laying offspring?

Egg shells can only be white or blue. Blue is Dominant so it only takes one to make a blue egg shell. There is only one pair of egg shell genes.

The coating can be brown or white. There are up to 15 genes that make brown so that is why we see so many shades of brown. Some amount of the brown genes will be passed on too so the brown over the blue will make the egg appear to be a shade of green.

The Blue egg shell gene O is only incompletely dominant(as most genes are, there are a few that are completely dominant) so a hen that i O/o+ will have a lighter shade of blue than a hen that is O/O

Blue is also determined by a liver enzyme which will make it darker or lighter depending on liver health and function.

Interesting about the difference in shade. Do you have some University experiments or studies about it? I would love reading more.

Thanks as always!

Quote: Not to argue since I don't know personally, but I heard the exact opposite is true. Apparently crossing a CL or Ameraucana with a leghorn will result in a SBEL (Super blue egg layer). Genetically they are O/o+ and lay a darker blue egg than the O/O hens.

I hope to find out for myself one day. I gave a O/O rooster to a friend who has leghorn hens. I'm hoping to get some eggs from her and hatch them out this year. Of course it will probably be a year from now before I get any eggs from the resulting offspring.

@ronott1 and @nicalandia can you shed some light on this comment/observation by @ochochicas reference SBELs

Thanks!
