Cream Legbar Hybrid Thread

One of these days, I plan on doing a marans roo over my CCL hen. I thought that would give me a pretty good start on a dark olive egg.

That's a nice cross and they would be autosexing, But I have a CCL roo and have not had the best luck with BCMs. I've always like the Welsummers and hope the cross will be a good one. I'm getting 20 pullets next week and will keep the ones with heavy eyeliner. Welsummers are somewhat autosexing (boys donn't have eyeliner) so maybe the cross will keep some of the autosexing traits with the eyeliner.

If your Welsummer lays a really dark egg and comes from a flock that all lay dark eggs, then there is a very good chance you will get an Olive egg layer. I did a Red Star cross whose egg was not even that dark brown but I got this egg (2nd from left). Mom's egg is 2nd from left in the bottom row whereas a Welsummer egg is 2nd from right in the bottom row.
Pretty!

I don't think autosexing unless the Marans was a cuckoo. JMO

Only one BCM chick hatched in this bunch and yes it has a head splotch, All the chicks do because the male in the scenario is the Cream Legbar and he passes the barring gene to all his offspring.

Just curious as a genetic newbie, that if that is the case, why do female Legbars and some chicks from my other crosses do not have the white spot?

4 of the 5 chicks of my Barnevelder crosses did not have a white spot. Fifth one only had a faint one.
Some of my EE crosses have a yellow V on their head surrounded by a darker yellow eye pattern
Some Australorp only have a faint spot, others big white spot.
None of the Brahma crosses have a white spot I believe.

Here are some pics of Australorp hybrids.

Here is the cross with Wheaten EE

Here is the cross with a Light Brahma. Other chicks are light, this one is different. Too much Legbar in this one!
