Cream Legbars

There is a range of crest sizes on the Cream Legbar. Some have to do with modifiers genes that effect the crest size and some have to do with birds that are missing one (or both) cresting genes. For the best cresting you require the bird to be pure breed for cresting (i.e. they inherit a cresting gene from both parent). The well crested chicks have a poof on their head that is visible as day old chicks. If they have the modifiers for smaller crests or they are missing one cresting gene there may be no poof at day-old but as soon as they start to feather out the crest should be visible. IF they have tail feathers and wing feather the cresting should be coming in.

I don't know much about bielfelders, but my chicks oftentimes (not always) have discernable crest bumps pretty early on, especially the females. Since their crests aren't particularly large, however, this isn't always the case.

Thank you Thank you! This is the best explanation that I have read about autosexing breeding.

I am trying to find out at what age the crest becomes visible on a CCL chick. I have CCLs and Bielefelders that are not yet separated though that is the plan. So I have chicks that look exactly the same. I have tagged those from the blue eggs, but want to know if there is a way to distinguish the breeds as early as possible!

Any advice? Aside from separating them???
I find the chicks pretty easy to tell apart from those 2 breeds. Legbar pullets are rarely clearly marked, but Bielefelders always are. Males are much tougher to tell apart. If you raise them together, at a few weeks of age you can clearly see the crests on the Legbars (if they have good genetics for cresting).

The one I have trouble telling apart is the Dom males and the Legbar males.... I know it should be easy but as babies it is not!!!!

Size would be a good way... But you would have to wait a few weeks... Seperate eggs into seperate trays and tag babies as you take them out of their breeds tray...

I did this and found I made an error...

When I emptied my hatcher (1202) I would start on the top and work my way down the trays...

After months of not being able to figure out how I was getting birds mixed up it dawned on me...

I have to start on the bottom and work my way up. Otherwise the little stinkers run to the back of the tray and jump into the tray below them.

So from now on I empty from the bottom up to stop them from mixing themselves up!

Chicks and chickens will do everything they can to make the best laid plans go haywire.
