Creating a new breed

Many, if not all, of the commercially bred chickens would be best decribed as calculated crosses.
It is a mistake to call most of them a "breed" though they often seem to be referred to as such.

We are all, each & every one of us, entitled to our own opinions.
People have been crossing birds ever since people started keeping fowl. Most of them remained, & will remain exactly what they are....cross breeds. In past times certain qualities might have been favoured in a certain area & thus selected for, eventually the type becoming established & set.
These days many people are still crossing birds, & why not? Some will dothis with a definite end in mind, & a definite plan, others the crossing will be more hit & miss. In reality very few crosses will ever become a "breed" & only a very small percentage of crosses will even lead to a new variety of an existing breed.

When looking at what happens when people set out to preserve an established breed it is noticeable that sometimes people find they cannot actually make their birds to fit the form of the breed & will finish up setting standards to fit the birds they have, thus not really fitting the breed they are trying to preserve. So how does one define preserving a breed?

The Pekin Duck is an example.....I don't know what the originals looked like. They were first imported into US & UK in the same year (1873) look how different they are in the two countries now. (The upright birds are the UK birds).

Hi! I hate to say it but you didn't just express your opinion, Chickenboykurt.
"I think there are already enough breeds and each breed has enough colors. Instead of creating new colors and breeds, why don't you help save existing breeds that are endangered? We have so many beautiful breeds to choose from, guys. Pick one and work on making it perfect. Don't try to make a new breed that ends up being a fad.

If you had said, "I prefer to help save existing breeds that are endangered", then that's your choice and I applaud that. When you used "you", it is as if you want to tell other chicken keepers / breeders how and what they (I) should breed.
I don't anticipate ever creating a new breed or that my crosses will ever make anyone happy except me.
For what it is worth, for every breed I cross, I maintain and perpetuate the 'pure' breed.

I was just asking. That's how I express my opinion sometimes. Sorry.

Keeping and improving existing Heritage breeds is a wonderful thing. And for those who choose to do that, I applaude them. I am keeping some myself.
But to never imagine, to never venture out of the norm...where is the fun of that? All new inventions begin with a thought. Effort.
I love the fact of creating a new breed. I posted a few months ago on this very subject and got shot down immediately. How sad.
I am very glad to see all your ideas and your great imaginations.
Keep going everyone.

This is the way I feel. I love my houdan and would eventually like to have them looking like they should but I also love my Polish crosses, what will come of those is anybodies guess but you just never know. I have enjoyed checking in on this topic and would love to see more crosses.
