Crochet "Chat"

The other night I just learned about a new crochet technique called "Event Plaid". Anybody ever heard of this? You take a significant date in your life and then represent it in a crocheted/woven square or pillow or blanket. For example, today's date is 2/19/15. You split the date into individual numbers: 2 1 9 1 5. Since you have 5 numbers in the date, you will need 5 different colors of yarn. You then make a filet crochet mesh (dc, ch1, repeat across) with 2 rows of color A, 1 row of color B, 9 rows of color C, 1 row of color D, 5 rows of color E. Now you have a mesh of dc, ch1 spaces and you WEAVE the yarn from bottom to top through the mesh holes of your square. When you weave the color pattern left to right is the same as the color pattern you used to make the mesh. The result is a unique plaid pattern that represents your special date (birthday, anniversary, etc.). It is confusing, but really cool. When I get a chance I will try to post a pic of the small square I made this way. To make an afghan, you just repeat the stripe pattern over and over, but I made a square using only 1 repeat just to try the technique.

Here are somebody else's pics of an afghan they made this way.

The first step is to make the filet mesh:

Then you weave strands of yarn vertically through the mesh:

Finished!

That sounds awesome! I may have to make one for my wedding day. It has a 0 so I'd have to do a set of 10. I would just need 4 colors that way 10 - 5 - 9 - 1

Last pkt of squares for the latest swap is not on it's way. And as promised I thought I'd post an idea for a different type of swap and see if anyone is interested in this new way.

Our last several crochet swaps have had only a few to participate, I think there are a couple of reasons for this 1 the price of postage, and 2 not everyone makes afghans and so far all our swaps have been w/ granny squares.

Here is my thinking about how to minimize these issues and hopefully allow more people to participate. What about if all the participants make an item, either crocheted or knitted, any item we would like, it could be granny squares, or animal, or hat, gloves, shawl, baby blanket, household accessories, etc...... We could share pics of our ideas and our projects and still be surprised, b/c when we actually finish the item is when we are included in the swap, by the deadline everyone who has a finished item will get the name of one other person in the swap, that we keep secret until they get it in the mail. We would only have the expense of one items postage one way. We would not ness. be getting the item of the person that gets ours, so the swap will be blind on both sides, everyone gets surprised in the mail, even though we all still could share what we are doing.

Does this sound like a format you guys would like to try?

Any thoughts, concerns???

I like that idea. I'm a beginner & am trying all kinds of things! I'm working on my first afghan & it is going to turn out very nice. I've made a bunch of easy scarves, fingerless gloves & hats. Also trying to make some bunnies for Easter.

Just finished this blanket for my newly wed sister!
I love making blankets for newly started families. You know that it will grow with their family! The couple will cuddle in it, the future kids will snuggle with it! Homemade blankets, I believe, are a true expression of love and best wishes for a happy life!

Very pretty!

For those of you familiar with Tunisian crochet, I have only done a small piece practicing the knit stitch, but it seems to curl over on itself. Almost like there is too much bulk on the backside. Is there a better way or is this just something that needs serious blocking?
