Crochet "Chat"

I've been making these as gifts for a few family members. They are trivets and the pattern is much more simple than I expected!

That reminded me of the trivets they used to make out of the "rubber rings" for canning jars. It's very nice. We've forgotten the purposes of the things our grandmothers used to have. These and doilies.

Thanks everyone!

Here are a few more things I made recently. It's been a whirlwind during my break from school trying to get all these gifts done. I took pictures of everything right before I gave them away.

The fried egg potholder I made for my mom tonight. It took a long time with all those single crochets! She wants a toast too, but I think I will have to create my own pattern for that one.

The colorful thing was supposed to be a coaster but it is too large so I made it a trivet. The coffee cups, dog butt, and goldfish are all coasters and are gifts for my uncle and two friends. The chicken doll was a gift for my cousin who is about to have a baby boy. Everyone loved their gifts so far!

Those are darling Chickerdoodle13! I also remember when we used the ring from a six pack of soda to make the little decorative doily style things, good for under house plants but not heat resistant like canning rings. I guess they were recycling/upcycling before it was chic. :)

I am finding that many of the decorative plant pots leak. The water eventually seeps through the bottom and that is not good for any furniture. I've paid a pretty penny for some of my planters. Sure a plastic lining helps. IF you can find one that fits.

Point being these doilies and pads can be a much needed item to make. Marble and cement counter tops are not impervious to marring. Stainless steel can be scratched by rough baking dish bottoms.

I'm old and we'd all like it if things were tough but even the new modern things have flaws not advertised. It's not WHAT they say we need to look out for, it's what they DON'T say.

Which of course is why I've switched from that wonderful non stick Teflon type pan to Cast iron. I'm even beginning to look for made in America as I don't trust China.

I'm going to be your echo here because I agree with everything said. I also have my cast iron in full use again and while modern counters beautiful, and not in my budget :) they do need protecting. I am still so happy with most of my vintage ideas and homemaking habits I find a comfort in it. I believe in purchasing made in usa, when possible, and I like doing the crochet my grandmother taught me, and all my other hand work and live my simple country life attitude (often interrupted far to much by real life).

I also crochet trivets for under my plants and for under hot pots, pans and serving dishes. Next I plan to crochet some pan carriers for going to potlucks. My grandmother used to make them and I'm just now realising how smart she was. Lol

Next I'll be crocheting tea cozies.

Seriously, tea cozies are on my someday list. :D

Tea cozies sound so fun! We're the casserole carriers just like the attached pot holders or around the whole dish?

I used to do pot holders that were all one piece and square but ended up double later, fun and quick.

Using them under plant pots is a great idea! Using cotton means you can wash them really easy and I always seem to have so many odds and ends.

My uncle bought me really soft yarn in white (super bulky) and mohair (bulky). I'm trying to find a blanket or cape/poncho pattern that would work with two different types of yarn. Do you guys have any ideas?
