Dark Egg Breeds Thread

Do you mean like these I just collected.
The Olive egg is Splash Copper Marans x Cream Legbar
Beautiful collection.

Has anyone else with Marans noticed that they produce a lot of blood spots in the eggs? We don't sell the eggs for eating any more for that reason. They sure hatch well and I rarely have any Marans chicks that don't sell within a week of hatch, but as producers of eating eggs, I'm not very enthusiastic about them.

Also, our Welsummers seem to not lay very well (fewer eggs per hen than the other breeds), but I have cracked open very few of their eggs (every single one gets incubated). Maybe it's dark egg layers in general that are less than stellar producers of eggs. I'm hoping some of the hybridization work I'm doing will improve things, but the results so far have been mixed. I have 4 WS hybrids hatched last fall. 2 laid very well (about 5 eggs / week), but I don't think the other 2 have laid an egg in their entire life!

I suspect too much inbreeding, but perhaps something else is going on.
My Welsummers laid very well and quite dark eggs. They came from Sandhill.

I just had to share this tiny egg on this thread…it is also the darkest color egg any of my girls has laid by far; heck it's the darkest egg I've ever seen. It's absolutely beautiful! I have no idea who laid it. Maybe one of my new girls is going to start laying these beautiful chocolatey brown eggs!

Very nice. Likely because it was so small, all the pigment was concentrated over a smaller surface area.

I'm not sure if this is the right thread to post this on but I'm lookin for the pretty eggs the dark blue dark brown olive colored eggs Ok I have a question I see all these gorgeous eggs blue brown dark colors I want to get them there awesome I have asked several ppl and I am confused on what Kind of hen and roo I need I have 2 rir hens 1 bcm hen 2 ee hens and 1 cream leg bar hen (still a chick) and bjg chicks and a bcm roo!! Who do I breed to have chicks that lay pretty eggs and olive eggers! Plz thanks!
Other than what Ron said, for dark brown, use a dark brown breed and breed within the breed. Don't outcross. If you have a line of Marans or Penedesenca or Welsummer laying dark eggs, stay within that breed. Outcrossing with another breed will give disappointing results and a waste of time. Let alone a waste of good genetics.

It was a bcm egg I am hatching some more I guess we will see what they look like from the same person it was a dark chocolate bcm egg

If the Breeder has RIRs, then that is the cross.

It will not be sexlinked so you will have to wait until they are older to tell the boys from the girls.

A lot of people think that they only need to wait two weeks before the old rooster is not the sire. They are WRONG!

Idk he told me all his birds aren't mixed and they are all seperate then this baby hatched and it didn't look bcm to me!! Now I'm upset cuz I bought more eggs from him and he says they are bcm!!

My guess is that e did not wait long enough between roosters before collecting eggs. The next batch of eggs should be pure--If they have been with the new Rooter for at least a month.

He should give you a refund though on the last hatch.

I think so to but he is upset that I sold some of the chicks from the eggs that I paid for and hatched!! He didn't tell me I couldn't before but anyway he's upset so I guess I am stuck!!

Huh?

If you buy icelandics, you can't resell them??
Mary, the Sheriff has a bunch of the Icelandic crowd harassing her because the do not think she is caring for them properly(on facebook). She has taken legal action against them too.

Sometimes those that import a breed or have a special or rare breed get very possessive of them even after they sell them. They try to make the person that buys them agree to things like not crossing them and etc.

It really goes against consumer law.
