Difference between Rouen and Mallard.

Yes, they're ducklings, not for long tho...lol. They grow up too quick. I just know from having chickens how to keep 5 gallon bucket from freezing in winter and would be much cleaner inside duck house if I had a way to get em water without a big mess...Ducks will be ducks. When they're out it's no problem but they will be locked in at night cuz of predators...And will be in more in winter, possibly.

Anyone wanna take a guess on mine? Im so confused if I have Mallards or Rouens and I think I'm driving my husband crazy now going back and forth between the two possibilities and then I am making it harder not knowing the sex!

We have a similar debate going on in my house. I'm not an expert by any means, but after reading through this thread I think we have 2 mallards and 1 rouen. I'm guessing on the previous posts that yours are mallards but again, I'm definitely not an expert. And I here you on the gender thing, it's driving me nuts not knowing! Here's my little guys before they got their feathers.

. You can see the one in the middle has a very distinct second stripe. The other two just have a dot.

I believe they said the 2 eye stripes indicates mallard. I was confused about mine cuz when I purchased it had 2 stripes but in couple days faded to just the one leaving spot where other one was, but I did see some Rouen for sale the other day and those babies eye stripe was very defined and dark...Like liner around the whole eye

Rouens have two black stripes on their face, one across their eye and one just under their eye. Mallards only have one eye stripe, across their eye. You can tell by the stipes from day olds. From what it looks like, yours only have one stripe, which means mallard.

I think the consensus was that 2 is a rouen. Mallards might have a lighter spot/line that seems to fade. My little guy with 2 stripes still has 2. The others only 1 with a spot on their "cheek".

Yes 2 is Rouen and the Mallards will be quite a bit smaller than Rouen also

That's interesting because my rouen is currently the smallest of the 3. How long does it take for them to be full size? It's possible he might be a bit younger.

I'm not sure about growth rate..I'll see if I can research it. I have only one so not much to compare. Rouen come in 2 sizes standard bred and production but both are bigger than Mallard. The standard bred is almost size of Pekin when grown. Rouen are considered a heavyweight duck. There blue area on side is normally bigger than a mallards also, once those feathers come in.

Most ducks are pretty close to full size by 10 weeks old.
A mallard is much smaller than a rouen.
I have seen rouens with only one stripe... and a small line spot under eye. Like a mallard and i have seen mallards with more of a second stripe. So i wouldnt only go by the stripes
Mallards are like 2-3 lbs full grown.
Rouens 7-8 lbs
So the size difference is pretty obvious
