I have not tried to build my own ‘bator, but the ones that I do have (have purchased) are forced air.
They have a small fan in a cage that allows some space between the top of the bator and the downward facing fan.
One small hole above the fan
(1/4- 3/8”?) for air draw, and several much smaller holes around the base at the outside corners, above the “trays”.
The forced (downward) heat/ air help minimize hot/ cool spots, and also help bring conditions back to normal as quickly as possible when you need to open it.
Sponge pieces can also be added if you are finding you are struggling to keep humidity up- or need to raise it for lockdown. Please make sure you grab an external hygrometer- you look like you are potentially covered with thermometers (although I agree- you need to get them to egg level and not vertical on the back).
Im sorry I don’t have a better pic of the fan/ housing.... but it is in the frame here for my lockdown bator.
....I am a total DIY junkie.... but. I will just throw out the question....
Between time and materials invested.... can you return the fan and just buy a simple bator from Amazon/ tractor supply/ Incubator Warehouse - and have the auto turners, heat and fans set up, add your thermometers, hygrometer.... and be ready to get those babies coming faster and with less stress / not much more $ out laid?
