Does anybody get FLACK from Family and Friends for having Chickens?

Well, no one has ever said anything to face. I kinda live in the country so maybe that is why at work no one has said anything. One guy and I talk and laugh about our lives raising animals.

I know my parent thought it was bit strange at first. But they know me well enough not to be surprised by the strange things I do.

Mostly, people like to come over to see the "girls", feed them and gather egss so it has been all good fun.

I hope some things shift for those of you who have suffered from friends and families comments. It is a wonderful thing to care for chickens, and you are all wonderful people for doing it.

I get this a lot. It doesn't matter this is a farming community, those that are not farmers think I am weird. First it was because we had a lot of dogs (raised and showed for 12 years) and then we got mini goats, just for pets and 4-H, then we started acquiring more and more stray cats that we fed and eventually fixed so they would stop breeding. Then we had horses, but sold them and now have mini donkeys. Again just for pets. Oh yes, we also have rabbits. We always got chicks in the spring and sold them at fair, but have decided to keep them year around starting with our new chicks arriving soon. All of our animals are mainly pets and 4-H projects. I just found friends that think like I do, for moral support!

1 DH, 2 DS, 2 DD, 4 dogs, 4 cats (lost a couple due to old age), 3 mini donkeys, 6 mini goats, 10 rabbits, 2 roosters (left from last years and now farm mascots), soon to be 15 chicks! Also hoping to get a pair of geese this year!

I had an Idea for the poster of this thread. if your co-workers have kids what do you think about them being invited over for easter egg hunting when easter comes around? It might change there minds? I dont know but its just a suggestion

We recently moved to the country and have 11 acres. My dream is to be self sufficient. I got mixed reactions with family and friends about wanting chickens. Some said I was crazy, that chickens are stupid, dirty and a lot of work blah blah. But I'm the kind of person that is going to do what I want and what makes me happy. I'm the one doing the work not them.

I am thankful though that I've had a few family members who are very supportive, including my Grandfather in Australia. I love calling him and talking for an hour or so and him telling me everything he knows about raising chickens and poultry. Listening to his "chicken stories" from 40 - 60 years ago makes up for all the jerks.

Enjoy your chickens and feel sorry for those that make stupid comments, they've never experienced the joy you have.

My Father in Law calls me a frustrated farmer....because all I have is chickens. They love the eggs, by the way!

My Mother is "worried" about me...thinks I MUST be unhappy to keep so many animals around. REALLY? I am 37 and am finally on a path to a blissful life without worrying about others judgments. I wish I could have been this secure when I was younger. I have abandoned my meditation area for the chicken coop. It is a Zen Haven! My husbands blood pressure went down after we got our chickens. Our chickens complete our family.
Who cares what they think!!! They are at a major loss!

Ahh, if you only truely knew me...

Nobody gives me any flack about anything, they know I don't need anyones approval on anything I do, and truely don't care what negative comments they might have.

my mom thinks they are a hoot !! she loves to hear about what Clyde my banty roo has done- she also loves me to go out in the chicken run with her on the phone so she can hear the chickens " talk " to me lol

now DH's family thinks the chickens are a waste of time and money and they see no point in having them

I love my chickens and love the eggs - so as far as I am concern any pet that gives me breakfast and eats bugs can stay LOL
