dog agressisve to other dogs... Can it be stopped?

My little ankle jumper male does this. For him it isn't aggression, it's more like self preservation...lol. I have found that the easiest way to get past all of that is to hold my male so the other dog/dogs can smell his butt. Once the bigger dogs do that they lose interest in the small dog.
For mine at least it is the fear of a huge looking dog approaching him that gets him growling. Once the dog smells his bottom he isn't interesting to the big dog anymore. Once the focus is off of my little dog then he is comfortable enough to relax around the bigger dogs and get to know them better.
