Dog Food Manufacturers

Hmmmm.... my dogs need to come live with you all. Sounds like some good living at your places.

Around here, they gets what's on sale. I have one that is 17 years old and the rest wearin' me out the rest of the time.

SO far, they do all right, yessir. Knock on wood...

Truth be told David my DH thinks alot like you in that regard. Before I moved in any dog on this farm was fed table scraps and dead chickens from the commercial broiler houses. All lived to ripe old ages. His mom's "stealth" chickens in the backyard were fed scratch only and foraged for the rest.
We feed the best we can afford and it's not the premium stuff. Should I just not feed the dog because we can't afford the $60 for a 30 lb. bag stuff?

We are going to be switching to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul soon, because we've found that we can get it for the same price we are paying for the other stuff now.
My animals are happy and healthy. If they weren't I'd see if their problem was food related - as it was with KiKi the siamese and corn gluten. I'd correct it if possible.
Not feeding premium allows us to afford things we might not otherwise be able to. Important things like heartworm preventive.

I see nearly all animals as just that, animals, even the dogs. Only fish, rodents and house birds might be called 'pets' in my esteem.

I don't want my dogs to suffer malnourishment, mind you, nor are they mistreated. They have it pretty good, in fact, and get what they need. I just don't go farther than their status warrants.

It is a choice each of us makes in our own way, I suppose.

Wow! Food for thought here, and no pun intended. I feed one can of Old Roy wet every day, split it between Oreo the pup and Onyx the old man, and do they ever let me know if I don't give it to them . . .the hairy eyeball deluxe. They are eating Purina Puppy Chow now, and all three LOVE it, but I have two great pyrs coming and they eat whatever the boarder's local feed store has. . .and they love it . . .so, question is, what is the best food? When I was a kid, we had dogs that lived to be way up in their teens, and they were fed table scraps and an occasional can of food . . .they caught the rest.

The same mnufacturer does NOT mean the foods are the same......it just means they're made by the same people, possibly/likely in the same facility. That it NO WAY mean the foods are the same or even close

Old Roy first five ingredients....
Ground yellow corn
soybean meal
ground whole wheat
corn syrup
poultry fat

Eukanuba first five ingredients...
Chicken
Chicken By-Product Meal
Corn Meal,
Ground Whole Grain Sorghum
Ground Whole Grain Barley

Not exactly the same, but I consider them both garbage since they both include corn and other fillers dogs did not evolve to eat. Same garbage, different label.

Now...here are the first five ingredients in Taste of the Wild...
Bison
venison
lamb meal
chicken meal
egg product

They probably lived long into their teens b/c they were eating that way.....if the table scraps were mainly meat and veggies and they were catching whole prey....not a bad diet for a dog. Its the heavily processed kibbles that can be an issue. Dogs used to routinely live late into their teens without tons of healthcare extending their lives........its b/c they ate scraps and caught stuff themselves....and didn't eat heavily processed kibble with tons of corn, soy, and wheat.

I agree that both are garbage....however, if I'm working in a petstore and am talking to someone who wants to be cheap with their dog food and has been feeding Ol' Roy.....I'm sure as heck going to try to get them to choose something like Eukanuba over Ol' Roy..... I would never feed either myself...but we don't all see our pets the same and not everyone is willing to spend for a truly appropriate food.....or go out of their way to get it.

Stina, I am in no way trying to argue with you. I see your point about the food. However, you say people that are not willing to spend the money on a truly appropriate food. What about people that can't afford the premium foods? Should they then not be allowed to own pets when pets do so much to enrich our lives?

I never said that......did I say people who just plain won't shouldn't have pets???......

You know...if you are giving your dogs biologically appropriate food....THEY EAT LESS than they do if you feed them corn based junk. So even though the bag of Taste of the Wild costs more, it last a lot longer....AND there is less poop to clean up.
