Dog Food Manufacturers

I spend $50 on a 33lb bag of Natural Balance for my Golden Retrievers. Their coats are beautiful and they are very healthy.

That being said, hubby's father fed 2 poodles the cheapest dog food made, and table scraps....they both lived over 18 years.

My mother's dog suffers from terrible food allergies and she has to get him the Dick Van Patten gluten-free all-natural food. I forget how much it costs but she said she got in an argument with the people at the pet store because it was fairly expensive.

Both her dog and my dog get their kibble supplemented with meat scraps, meat broth and eggs. My dog also gets a hold of deer bones and half-eaten ruffed grouse in our woods (though the latter always gets me nervous) and an occasional hoof paring when we go out to the barn.

Mom's dog has a lot of lipomas in spite of his careful diet (gluten-free, all natural organic feed) but beautiful teeth (I mean SPARKLING). My dog is nearly ten and only began showing signs of arthritis a few months ago.

Good post.

It is interesting to see the relationship between pet food manufacturers.

Something else to be aware of is the narrow supply chain that provides protein sources to the high volume manufacturers.

Here is a link to partial and frightening list pet food products that were recalled because of potential melamine contamination from ONE SUPPLIER from China, Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology in 2007

Overall, more than 5300 pet food products were recalled from this ONE incident in 2007.

To say that we had a near miss with mass poisoning in 2007 is understatement. Thousands of pets died from this ONE incident. No one knows for sure the full scope of the damage caused.

My old dog Charlie was the exception to the rule about dogs not eating corn on their own. He would go into the cornfield and pick himself an ear, bring it back to the yard and peel it and eat it. Charlie loved his nightly snack of corn.

I believe that supply was sent to ONE Menu Foods facility in Kansas and it was only items from that specific facility that were actually contaminated. MANY more foods were recalled than were actually affected by the contamination. One of the links posted by someone actually goes through nearly every brand of pet food and whether they use Menu Foods or not...and if so, if the food was affected. Not even all of the food produced by Menu uses ingredients from outside of the US.
