Dried egg gunk...a soft tooth brush can help fluff it up....or just wait, it wear off on it's own.

Egg gunk, totally normal. It will usually go away by itself, or you can help like aart said. Usually means there were some humidity issues during incubation and he didn't use up all of the whites. I've had chicks get glued to their shells by the stuff.

Yes it's like shellac!

Thank you guys for explaining! I was worried when I saw his new sister all fluffy and he wasn’t. Glad it’s nothing to worry about! He does seem a bit slower than her but he’s already perked up with a friend

Gulliver has a friend!

Now that he’s no longer a lonely duckling stranded in unfamiliar territory I figured I should change his name!
I’m thinking Tony and Ziva because NCIS is my favorite show haha.

It’s cute, he’s definitely perked up now that he has a friend. She’s a lot more feisty than him but I think being stuck in that egg till I got to him probably made him a bit sluggish still. She races around while he mostly sits somewhere but he already started walking around more with his new friend and they are some of the mash my mom made together. Also made sure to show them where the water is and they both drank so that’s good!

Nope, one of the single yolkers hatched and she got a buddy for it. All the double yolkers DIS (died in shell)

Quick question about grit!

I know babies need it and I’ve been reading up on it. Can I use crushed egg shells or is that not good enough as grit? Anyone use anything special for theirs?

No don’t use eggshells it is too high in calcium. Most chick feeds contain grit. You can wait to go to the feed store to buy special chick grit to offer on the side.

Don't confuse granite grit for digestion in the gizzard,
with oyster shell or egg shell for calcium needs.
