D'uccle Thread

Oooohh! Congrats. I'm glad everything went O.K. You're lucky; It looks pretty nice whereever you're at. It is about 5 degrees here, and that is without the windchill!
It was perfect weather for her to lamb. 63 degrees. But it will get down around 30 tonight, but thats nothing compared to the temperature where your at!

Has anyone noticed before if, as the hen ages, she lays larger eggs? Some of my banty hens are about two now, and have been laying larger, white eggs, almost full size but more torpedo shaped. my large hens are all brown, green or blue egg layers, so it has to be banties. Anyone else's mature hens lay larger eggs?
I have 2 1/2 yr old millies, their eggs are big but no where near how big my large hens egg size. That could also be that my layers are laying eggs the size of double yolkers.

I know have two Mille Fluer cockerels crowing. One is okay at it but the other isn't very good. I'm pretty sure my Golden Campine is crowing too.

(to the post above)
My campine roo is only about 3 months old and tries to breed my 3 month old pullets. They won't be fertile for a while.

My Mille fleur cockerel has been trying to mate my D'uccle pullets and hens. Could he be fertile at such a young age??

I keep my pullets in a different pen from the cockerals when the boys start getting getting "frisky". It saves wear and tear on the pullets and they are happier. Also, I've had aggressive boys chase the girls around so much that they lost weight from not being able to eat or drink in peace. I've even had some pullets get injured from aggressive boys that were rough on them. If the rooster gets them onto the ground roughly enough to damage the tendons in the leg, you can lose a good pullet.....

Thank you. I have them in separate pens during the night, but sometimes let all of them out to free range. I'll keep a close eye on them now.

Hi everyone,

We're having a dismal time with our chickens the last two days.

I'm hoping some of you with d'Uccles might be able to help. One of my daugher's little hens was refusing to walk today and is using her wings for balance. She will not put any weight on one of her legs. Upon closer inspection, it looks like substantial scaly leg mite is going on under all those feathers.
My daughter said this hen has always kind of "shuffled", but not like this. We purchased them in the fall and this hen is at least 2 years old.

So, any ideas? She scarfed down a little plate of scrambled eggs and yogurt.

I'd like to treat them for scaly leg mite, but how does that work with those feathered legs? Thanks in advance!
