Dumbing down of America

What is truly sad is that many of my professors in college have been no better. I can't tell you how many times I get a syllabus and it will be filled with obvious spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. I now have a personal policy that I won't take classes with professors that can't do something as simple as spell check. I have been doing a lot of my work online the last couple semesters because I have been so sick, hence I have done a lot of written communication with instructors and classmates (I'm in online classes with students from several colleges that can't, for one reason or another, be in the classroom). Most of the classes have had discussion boards that have been key components of the class. One class this last semester, I had a professor that didn't capitalize letters when beginning sentences, would spell things like "you" as "u", and so much of her communication was just a random phrase. It was just atrocious, especially considering the students were held to a high standard.

Have any of you seen the movie "Idiocracy?" It was marketed as a comedy, but in my opinion it should be categorized as horror.

.....There were meanings and spellings to several different words changed in the dictionary. If you look most of those changes were made in 1964 & 1965. Many of the words that had there meanings changed were words that JFK had used in his speeches, & written promises to the people. That was thought to be done to have hidden the meaning of his words. Which is where all our freedoms whent. Yes I've studied it!..............The real dumbing down that the OP refers to, I believe came from teaching kids to read by means of Phonics. That was started 30 years ago. I was taught to read with that method. It made learning to spell properly diffecult for a lot of kids.

Yes, it absolutely bothers me. I'll never forget when I worked at the local library and a teacher came in to use one of the computers to write some sort of letter. I seem to remember it was for a job application or something like that. It was absolutely full of mistakes!

The thing that bothers me most is the posts on forums that are just paragraphs without any punctuation or capitalization. It's just rude to expect people to wade through and try to decipher and decide where sentences should begin and end.
