Dumor Feed

When we use the Dumor feed the chickens poop smelled, did a search on feed and found out that's it's not the best of feed, we switched to blue seal layer pellets, egg shells are harder, poop smell is down and they seem to not poop as much, does anyone use penfield brand?

Unfortunately, Dumor is the only brand around here that I can find in pellets. The girls waste about half if fed crumbles. We only have TSC, Rural King, and Orscheln around here. I've also checked at local mills and they don't sell pellets either.

I also use Dumor. I dont think that it affects my chickens in any sort of negative way. Then again it is all I have ever used so maybe they would do better on somthing else. Curious.......

I was told this morning that Dumor feed is supposed to be dropped within the next 2-3 wks and the replacement set. My friend cannot find out what the replacement feeds will be. The corporate officials will not elaborate on this news. Are they trying to keep this all some big secret? It is most inconsiderate to customers. There will be those who won't give a hoot, doesn't matter the name on a big as long as it is a bag of chicken feed. I know that I am looking into alternative sources now.

You're right. Not a peep from my TSC, cos I was just there to buy buckets last night.
I'm pretty sure that the other feed store carries Purina "Layina" (or something like that) besides a generic brand, so I may just switch feed stores.

Have been hearing on talk rado shows that some producers are putting some bad things in their food. One thing mentioned was genetically modified grains. I would be leery of any really big outfit. We are newbies and have only used Dumor bought at TSC. We have given our pullets garden produce since they were a week old. Our pullets are 14 weeks and look big enough to be laying now. Our kids juice a lot and we have asked them to save all of their fruit and veggie pulp for the birds so that will now be on board too. Ours have a large pen at 2,000 sq ft so they are currently able to eat grass and bugs, which they do every day.

I am looking into putting a compost pile, maybe 6" tall by 5 ft sq in the center of the pen. I would cover it with chicken wire. I would then try to grow crickets and nightcrawlers or redworms. All that try to leave the compost will be treats for my girls, unless they escape the pen by night. Kind of a self-sustaining food source. Crickets are probably roughly the same price as worms and you can get a thousand for not much money. It is worth trying once. I am investigating mealybugs to see if they are practical.

We avoid giving anything with yeast or sugar to the birds. Most everything else is ok. With chickens, no leftovers get tossed (except bread scraps)

GSIM that sounds like a great idea with the compost, just keep a eye out for those rodents

yea i never really like dumor, now that i have been using a different feed, even the shape of the egg is better now, it looks more normal.

the problem is some brands dont regulate the amount of each ingredient put in when making, so each batch may contain more or less of something or substitute something for another ingredient.

I had this problem with Chinchilla feed, i was using Hubbard and i kept finding big piece of corn and or the bag would be most dust, when it should be all pellet.
and even other people in different states where have the same issue with Hubbard chinchilla feed, so i switch to Pen Pal, they even have a great chicken feed.

Sorry to say that everything has GMO grains in it, even our food. Organic should not, but with pollination etc. who knows how good their testing is. Fact of life for a country who has deemed the GMOs "safe".

We juice a lot too and at first I also thought the pulp would be great for the chooks to scratch through but they weren't much interested in it. I think the juicer takes out most of the flavour and anything of interest, so what is left is not worth their while. It doesn't go to waste though - we just throw it in the compost.
