Dyeing the chicks

Yes, we must take local laws seriously! Living in Wisconsin it is illegal to kiss on a train.

I'd just like to say..it's great that you spelled 'dyeing' correctly. Once I was watching the local news running the names of businesses closed for a snowstorm (that little feed at the bottom of the screen) and they said the "Jones Dying Plant" was closed. The "dying plant". My Mom has lots of those at her house.

Good luck with your project!

Ya know I would be concerned about contamination too except..... I had a pidgeon problem in my barn.

If I took the eggs out of the nests they just laid more. So I decided to take a rusty finishing nail I had laying around and punctured the eggs and put them back in the nest figuring they would be contaminated and wouldn't hatch. Wouldn't you know but most of them did and I had to deal with even more pidgeons. Unbelievable.

Good luck with your project!

No wonder the folks in Wisconsin voted for a nonsense Governor ! No really there are many state laws that are totally absurd and obsolete. Frankly sometimes stopping for traffic light and stop signs at three am seems stupid. But my favorite is the fact that the IRS has the power to incarcerate people. I mean come on going to jail because you did not give much of your earnings to the feds so they could close down the government because they could not agree on a budget.\\

But I am following this thread because I would like to know the outcome. Besides fun, dying chicks could be a useful tool in deciding the effects of a particular crossing. It could keep the stats in order to help to see if a project is working. I mean, I need every tool I can use cause I am so busy wondering if I can keep the absurd and arcane laws ! tee hee and duh !

This is what it says for NY.

2.No person shall sell, offer for sale, barter or display living baby chicks, ducklings or other fowl or baby rabbits which have been dyed, colored or otherwise treated so as to impart to them an artificial color.
a.No provision of subdivision two shall be interpreted or applied to prevent or restrict teachers and qualified instructors of youth under the guidance and supervision of the New York state cooperative extension service from using eggs for nonprofit educational purposes or from observing fowl hatched from such eggs for nonprofit educational purposes.

Its so interesting to see what everyone's local ordinances say. I wonder if it is at odds with the federal regulations who wins in court?

The Federal Animal Welfare Act says:

Farm Animals are regulated under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) only when used in biomedical research, testing, teaching and exhibition. Farm animals used for food and fiber or for food and fiber research are not regulated under the AWA.

So according to the Feds the farmer can do as he or she pleases with their animals as long as they are not being exhibited etc.

Chickflick247, please keep us posted on what you use and what the chicks hatch out like--with lots of pictures, of course!
