Eastern WA - Be Careful Where You Get Your Birds.....

Quote:
Copy and paste the merck veterinary manual info into your browser and you can read about it.

ETA: I have footbathes into my garden area and in the entrances of my coops for this reason.

last year a person I know that shows his birds all over the US had an outbreak of Laryngo in his flock. He vaccinated his flock AFTER exposure because he didnt know they had it. Its better to vaccinate before hand. But, more survive after they catch it you can still vaccinate ,but before it gets to seriouse. well that last sentence was kinda jumbled

Yikes Jean! are you using the LTI-vax or the other vaccination. I bought some from my vet supply, but havent done the birds yet. I wonder how that persons birds got it?

Yes I am. It is pretty easy to use, just put a drop in the eye. I quarter mine so I can have more use out of it. You will need to get a sterile scapel to cut the wafer and needles from your vet for the activating solution.

Just vaccinated most of the chicks and boostered the adults on Saturday.

This person that I know who has it buys adult birds and throws them in their flock. They tested positive for it after the Lincoln County Fair and did nothing about it but denied.

She is supposed to be under quarantine, but just sent hatching eggs to another person on the forum.

As an FYI:
Check with the animal health commission in your state for regulations regarding ILT.

In Texas it is a reportable disease and if even ONE bird tests positive on your property, the whole flock will be depopulated.

Also, there are two kinds of ILT vaccine - one live, one dead. With both vaccines, the birds are carriers for a certain length of time. The live vaccine cannot be used in Texas, so check with your state.

I hope the gal from this forum leaves feedback about this. I saw that person's feedback and it was all great. So without this info, the poor buyer wouldn't have a clue. That is just so unbelievably irresponsible.

This really is a case in point as to why to buy eggs and stock from a reputable person. I really think BYC should have a sticky about buying safely. Maybe there is one, and I missed it?
