What a great story! Thank you for sharing. I'm not surprised she stays, your place is her home. Give them food, water and shelter and you can't get rid of them :gig

Pigeons do co parent so keeping food and water next to her now is a good idea. They also feed their babies in the nest until they're feathered out and learn to fly so I'm not sure if chicken eggs would be your best option. I would also be concerned about her ability to manage it all by herself. In my opinion it would be best to let her sit but not give her any fertile eggs. Some day she may find a mate.

Best of luck to you and Egberta!

Hi everyone,

she stayed faithfully on her nest for sometime, but I made her a new nest on the wall and moved her eggs. She was starting to look a little scruffy on the ground, it just wasn't safe for her there. She wasn't impressed with that and eventually nested again next to the chicken nest. She had been obsessed with their babies, so probably thought that spot was 'the one'! Egbert laid an egg there and another in with the other broody hen. Whom actually started sitting on the pigeon egg. And then apparently lost interest again

She doesn't have a nest spot again, but she's constantly 'looking' and grooming the rooster, trying to butter him up ;)

I almost lost her the other day. She caught my attention flying laps, the quickest I'd seen her go! I then realised she was being chased - by three hawks. It was incredibly scary, all I could do was yell at them. For a pigeon whom is a 'chicken' and spends majority of time on the ground, her aerobatics were very impressive!

She flew off for an hour and I thought she was gone. I eventually found her hiding in the feed shed with her chicken gang :th

We don't normally have hawks around, but they are a risk here. Hopefully she's become a little wiser!

Wow that must have been scary! I'm glad she made it back unscathed. There have been a few losses to hawks and other attacks. She needs to keep with her chicken buddies!

That's exactly what we said! Keep with the chickens, mate!
She is with them majority of the time, aside from when she's going for a little fly around. Hopefully next time she knows!

I'd love to see that video. In order to show it here you first have to upload it to youtube or vimeo. It very simple and easy. :caf
Best wishes to you and your flock!

Oh, I didn't even think of youtube! I will definitely do that. I'm in exam study right now, but when it wraps up and dig through all my videos, and put them together :)

What a nice story- hopefully you will continue it as her life goes on... It's amazing the chickens let her in.

It's lucky they did! They are so close, I often catch Egbert with her head in Minty's (the rooster) mane of feathers grooming him! They also are all so accepting of the new babies this spring (my first time letting the hens raise the babies, so unsure if it were normal behaviour or not). One of the black chicks runs under Minty when he's scared instead of his own mother! :p I'll be sure to keep Egbert's story updated
