Emu Hatch-a-long 2012

Ok I checked the egg before going to bed and I noticed that the breathing wasn't right from what it was in the morning. I broke open the egg to expose the head and the inner membrane was drying around the head and the chick was not getting enough oxygen. I left the half egg on the chick and went to the bathroom to get ready for bed and I must have taken too much shell off cause the chick was out and bleeding. I though fast and grabbed some of those make up remover pads. (they were in the bathroom vanity when I bought the house
wink.png
) they helped stop the bleeding at the yok sac. I did put Neosporin on the yok sac belly button and cut a waterproof non stick band aid brand bandaid on it. The poor thing's eye lids (or the part around the eyes) are so swollen and had some redness starting in the corners. I do not think it would've made it through the night. Right now it is resting and moving around now and then. The swelling isn't as bad right at this moment cause I just checked.
Is there anything else I can do for this little one if he survives?

neosporin or iodine on the bloody navel..

is this the chick that didn't lose enough weight?.. if so there isn't much you can do except keep him warm and plenty of air.. his body needs to use up the extra water and yolk that's in it.. in all he looks pretty good.. so for now play it by ear.. see how he acts over the next few days..

as a note..

the biggest issue he might have is a failure to use up the yolk.. so if after three days he has a tight distended belly.. waddles rather than walks.. has very thin dehydrated looking legs.. it means he's not absorbing the yolk and it has basically still there as a big lump. The chick will end up starving to death since the yolk isn't being absorbed.. yet he feels full because his belly is tight. My understanding is that the chick will die unless you can find a vet who will surgically remove the yolk sack.
So lets hope he uses up the yolk.. then begins to eat normally.

I am going to give the fat one that I helped out of the egg a bath. The red belly button is already gone and no sign of blood there at all. I call the little one Theodore cause it reminds me of the little fat chipmonk from Alvin and the Chipmonks LMAO! Well anyways it has dried blood on most of it's body so I will give it a quick bath and into the incubator to dry then into the 52 gallon pen with it's other baby LOL
I am also thinking that the 2nd chick is a girl cause no bulls eye. Can't see the fat ones head cause of the dried blood. Might be looking for boys Yinepu!!

Theodore is getting stronger each day. The other chick is standing and running everywhere LMAO! I did notice that Theo is starting to get thinner so it must be using the yok sac. Once it is used I will tape the legs to prevent slayed legs. It was enjoying it's nice warm bath with dial liquid soap and took the rinsing very well. Funny to see a nice clean chick that also smells nice too LOL
The bigger one's leg is still turned outward but she is running and jumping on it and the tendon is still in place. I was told by Carole that she might be fine and will grow up but just have a leg deformity as long as she is walking on it. If she stops and doesn't get up then she will have to be put down. So, so far so good we will have to se what the summer has in mind for her.

Do you tape the legs - or just real careful for traction ?
I will tape the fat one's legs when the yok sac is gone. Also good traction is key to good walking. Sometimes they are born with problems and they cannot be helped. Someone posted on here that both her chicks had splayed legs. Another person tried to save her chick but couldn't a Necropsy (sp) done and the results came back as the chick had no hip sockets if I rememner correctly. Some people tape the legs just in case because it develops splayed leg the first week. My first bird got it from the hardwood floor. She wouldn't stay on the rug and kept running into the kitchen. I bought a 6x9 foot indoor/outdoor rug (can cut it with scissors) for $20. I took card board sheets I got from Costco (BJs should have them too) and cut them in half and made cardboard fencing so now they all stay on the rug LOL. I should've thought of this in the beginning and the first chick would be fine right now.

How's your incubating going? Remember if you open the door and it smells like a bad egg, be sure you take each egg out and smell them closely, you will find it

Glad to hear about your Kansas eggs - I was able to get 6 that will be here tomorrow - They will be the last ones I set.
I will have a staggered hatch of 3 settings one week apart - now I have to wait and see if I get anything to hatch.

I removed one more leaker from my 1st setting - leaker #1 and #2 from Oregon.

I tied his legs last night but I do not think theodore is gonna walk. So far he has not sttod on the own feet. He uses his hocks to get around. It is still fat and he is really bottom heavy so I do not know how long it will take to lose the excess weight?
