Emus Sleeping at Night

Hi,

I have a 1 year old emu and she lives at my ranch. However, there is no shed or shelter in her pen, only a large tree that provides shade. Since emus wake up several times at night, I was thinking about putting a small solar light in the pen so that she could see where she’s walking at night since the ranch is pitch dark. Is this a good idea/necessary? I just don’t want it to attract other animals or people driving by the ranch.

I don't think a lamp would necessarily attract animals, but I'm no expert. Emus are pretty big right? I would assume that if it were attacked then it would be able to defend itself.

Also, if emus are anything like their fellow birds, chickens, then having a light to see by might help it escape if it were to be attacked.

Can you put up a shelter for her? I know they sleep outside a lot, but mine definitely utilize theirs for getting out of the weather when they want to.

I don't have a light out for mine and they seem to get around in dark okay. I don't think a light would hurt anything, though.
