My Maran mix has an extra "thumb" on one foot. Is this a mutation or what else? The other egg Maran I hatched came out with curled toes which I am giving them vitamin water and she will be getting booties, but what about the extra digit? Please help.

What is she mixed with? Some breeds, like silkies and sultans and faverolles, have five toes on each foot instead of four, so it's completely normal, especially if a five-toed breed is in its ancestry somewhere.

I wouldn't worry about it! I had a silkie rooster, and when the eggs hatched we had a couple frizzle/silkie mixes, who of course had five toes like their father. The chick may have a hen/roo in it's family line that was a five toed chicken. Have fun with the babies!

Thanks for replying! It's only on one foot though and it's literally right next to the other back toe. Like it's almost coming out of it. I embrace my chickens oddities cause they are wonderful. I am just worried about her walking. She seems to hobble around when she actually does walk and it's only a few steps then she hunkers down and rests.

Oh ok I have seen pictures of the extra thumb and it's right in line with them. She was prob mixed with a salmon fav. I just hope she gets more mobile. Thanks all

i have a maran x dorking it has five toes on the left and four on the right, she walks fine i didn't have her as a chick but im sure it'll take some getting used to but it'll do fine i'm sure
