Extremely swollen foot!! Bumblefoot, scaly leg mites, or something else!?

What are you feeding them, including treats? What percent protein is their feed?

Does she have any respiratory symptoms? Have you noticed any deformed eggs lately?

It doesn’t look like bumblefoot or scaly leg. I would be suspicious of mycoplasma or gout.

They are eating this food. 18% protein. I was giving them scratch sometimes but haven’t in a couple weeks. I did just give them a bunch of cucumbers the other day and let them free range a couple times this week.

Some of them were sneezing a bit but I haven’t really noticed any issues since I cleaned the coop out a couple weeks ago so I figured maybe it was just dust or something. It was very dusty in there for some reason. But took all that out and put fresh shavings down and haven’t noticed any other issues. I did also put some Vet RX under some of the birds wings and in the water a little bit before that just to be safe.

The eggs all look normal although some of them are a little small from some of the girls but I figured that was just age. They’re turning 4 the end of next month. Most of them actually aren’t even laying right now. For a while it’s just been one EE and one Orpington (not sure which one, I have two) but the Orpington just stopped I think. So now it’s been just the EE the last few days. And one of the new chicks started up today.

I have never even heard of those.

Are they serious? She is acting healthy otherwise.

Although they are also all molting right now too.

Thanks for the explanation, I learned something new today lol

You’re welcome LOL if you click on the little plus sign in the menu bar next to the video reel you can add a spoiler and a few other things.

Her standing...in bright light...just that leg/foot.

Okay I will try to get that tomorrow.

Does look like gout to me. Which can be high protein or in my oldest roo, too much calcium. Hen shouldn't have a calcium issue

Is that serious? How do I treat it?

They are eating 18% layer feed right now. Also they’ve been on All Flock, Flock Raiser, and Starter/Grower a lot lately because of the chicks. So maybe it is too high protein for her??

Although they’re usually on Flock Raiser all winter anyway once they stop laying and never had a problem.

They have oyster shell free choice and one of the Orpington isn’t laying, not sure if it’s her or not.

Get a helper...to hold her still.

Okay, I’ll have my parents help or maybe they can take the picture while I hold her.

Personally I think mycoplasma is more likely..

Dog do any of them have swollen faces, foamy eyes, sinus discharge, etc?
Does her foot and leg feel hotter than normal? Compare to another chicken.

How would they get mycoplasma? Their faces all appear completely normal but some of them do sometimes sneeze out some clear liquid, I think it was one of the Orpingtons that did that, but I haven’t noticed it lately. Her leg didn’t feel hot when I was holding her/moving it for the pictures but idk. Should I go back out there and check right now or wait till morning?

I think the right swollen ankle looks like mycoplasma synovitis which affects the joints, which may or may not have cause respiratory symptoms. But since it is only on the one foot and not the other, my guess is that it may be sprained or broken. If there was evidence of bumblefoot or other infection, it could be swollen due to another bacterial infection in the joint, but since there is not, I would still think it might be sprained or broken.

Thank you, this is very helpful. Can they still have mycoplasma even if they have no other symptoms and all the other chickens are fine? This particular chicken is also acting perfectly normal. Also would she be limping if it was broken? I haven’t really noticed her doing that but will be looking more closely. Can I treat a broken or sprained foot myself or would she need a vet? I have a lot of vet wrap.

This picture from Merck Vet Manual shows the swollen ankles and hocks that cause the bacterial joint infection of mycoplasma synovitis or MS. Usually it is seen in both feet and legs.

Thank you. That definitely looks a bit like her foot but I think it is only on one foot. I will look again tomorrow.

If it is that, is it treatable?
